Summary:page 8 the concordian february 12, 1982 Expedition to cross last frontier9 by Erik Burros On March 8th, a Concordia College based team of six men and six women will begin what will be a "historic** first ever ski trek across Lappland. Named the 1982 Minnesota Lappland Expedition, the group will begin their journey in Kandalaksha, Russia, and ski more than 600 miles over the rugg-ed terrain of Europe's "last fron-tier" until they reach Ofotfjorden, Norway, sometime in Mid-April. Leading the expedition will be St. Paul native Paul Erickson. Erickson is an instructor at Con-cordia in Nordic skiing, Whitewater kayaking, orienteer-ing, backpacking, canoeing and winter camping survival. One of the most impressive achievements in his dossier of outdoor adven-tures is the 1980 Minnesota Ski Expedition Across Greenland BRIEFS continued from page 1 Various campus groups will be addressed on the subject of leader-ship dynamics by speakers Lois Hart and Dave Dahlke on March first and second. Topics such as "Gaining a Healthy Self-Perception," "Delegation and Supervison," "Co-Worker Relations," "Accep-ting Authority" and "Dealing with Conflict Situations" wi!I_ be discussed in the sessions, which were arranged by the committee on the status of women. In addition to the sessions for the campus groups, a breakfast on March second is open to anyone interested at a cost of $2.25 per plate. Reservations may be secured by calling 3455 before February 19. * * * Speaker Nancy Lee Borden will address a women's health forum 7:30 p.m. Friday March fifth in Frida Nilsen Lounge. Co-sponsored by the Women's Center and the Health Professions Interest Club, the forum will also feature an introductory film "Healthcaring: From our end of the Spectrum. Borden, who holds a bachelor's degree in physical therapy and a master's and doctorate in counsel-ing, is currently and assistant pro-fessor at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks. It was only the third successful crossing of the world's largest island, but was done in a world record time of 36 days. Also participating in the Lap-pland Expedition will be Marilyn Erickson, the wife of Paul Erickson, Kris Bjerkness, Judy Johnson, Corrine Skurdal, Dennis Cuchna, Darlene Wahl and George Wurtzel. The base camp members who will be communicating with and providing constant support for the skiers are Kent Natvig, Beth Skrurud, Nancy Olson and John Borge. Of unique interst are the two blind skiers participating in this dangerous trek across Lappland. They are George Wurtzel and Darlene Wahl. Wurtzel is atten-ding the university of Nor-thwestern Michigan. He was cap-tain of the U.S. Blind Nordic Ski Team which participated in the 1980 2nd annual winter games for the disabled in Norway. Wahl is a B.S. candidate in anthropology at Lawrence University in Appleton, WI, but is temporarily enrolled at Concordia. Although legally blind, Wahl has always been ac-tive in the outdoors. "I'm really excited for the ex-pedition to begin," Wahl said. "It will be a great experience for me. I don't expect my blindness to be any problem. There is no limit to what a person can do." "One of the goals of this expedi-tion is to emphasize the achievements of the handicapped," Erickson said. "We hope to arouse public awareness and support for the proposed Vinland National Center." Erickson stressed that Wurtzel and Wahl are both competent and capable skiers who will add their expertise to the scientific and educational studies. Other goals of the expedition, according to Erickson, are to "af-firm the equality of men and women in a co-educational situa-tion"; to investigate the "culture, "lifestyle and language" of the Lapps; to represent the "tradi-tional Minnesota Scandanavian viking spirit'*; and of course to be the first group to cross Lappland by ski. But it will not be easy. The group will encounter "violent" ar-tic storms and blizzards which are, according to Erickson, "com-monplace in this region above the Artie Circle." "The ultimate challenge," Erickson said, "will be crossing the Kjolen mountain range bet-ween Sweden and Norway." Climbing Mount Kebnekaise, Sweden's tallest mountain will be no easy task either. Mountaineer-ing techniques will be utilized to bring the entire team to the sum-mit which should "prove to be," Erickson said, "a dramatic feat for the team." However, the most significant aspect of the Lappland expedition will be endurance. According to Erickson, "Mental discipline and physical ability will be tested to the limit" as the party makes-jts way across Lappland. Of major importance to the ex-pedition are the scientific and educational studies to be perform-ed during the journey. Studies to be performed will be the monitor-ing of the physiological perfor-mance of the skiers under pro-longed endurance conditions. A psychological study will measure changes in personality among the skiers during the 50 day trek. Development of training techni-ques suited for an expedition will also be implemented as well as a cultural study will be undertaken to observe the changing lifestyle of the Lapps. Last weekend the team left for Mille Lacs Lake for ski and parachute training. The expedi-tion will bring a large parachute with them to hook onto their pulks, a fiberglass sled. If the wind is right the parachute will catch it and pull them across the large lakes and high plateau regions.
