Summary:february 1,1980 the concordian page 13 sports Wrestlers overpower four-team event By ROB PAIN The Concord ia wrestlers picked up three more victories last weekend at St. Olaf beatinp the conference teams of St. Olal, Gustavus and a non-conference team from Simpson. The Cobbers opened with a 24-15 win over Gustavus Adolphus. Two Cobbers got pins over the Gusties, Duwayne Kil-ho and Molly McLeod, while Steve Leonardi, Tom Gruhlke, Brian Clark and Jim McLeod all won by decisions. Next the Cobbers faced the St. Olaf "Oles" crushing them by the team score of 42-9. Pins by Tom Gruhlke and Molly Mc- Leod, aided by three forfeits in the 118, 134, and 142-pound weight classes Concordia col-lected the easy win. Winning by decisions were Steve Leonardi, Brian Clark, and Duwayne Kil-bo. In the final round Concordia triumphed over Simpson, a tough team from Iowa. 26-17. Simpson was especially tough in the lighter weights, but Con-cordia managed to fight back with decisions bv Tom Gruhlke. Brian Clark, Jim McLeod, Duwayne Kilbo and Molly Mc- Leod. The grappiers also picked up two forfeits in the 177 and 190 pound weight classes. The end of the long Saturday of wrestling saw Senior Tom Gruhlke, Junior Brian Clark and Freshman heavyweight Molly McLeod emerge undefeated in three matches of the day. This weekend the wrestlers face conference opponents Augs-burg and Bethel at Augsburg. Bob Jensen, assisting coach Grinaker this season, is known to be a vocal addition to matches. Here Jensen shouts instructions during Concordia's struggle with Bemidji State. Coach Grinaker seems to be more "intellectually involved." Senior co-captain Tom Gruhlke puts the wrench to a Bemidji State opponent working for a six very -point pin. Tom, at 150 pounds has enjoyed a ' successful senior year on the squad. Hamline turns back Cobber Hockey 2-2 and 5-4 By BOB OLSON The Hamline Pipers rallied in both games to close down the Concordia Cobbers in final Deri-ods. handing them a 2-2 tie and a 5-4 loss in the MIAC two-game series. In Friday night's game, Jan. 25, on Hamline ice the Pipers came out to score the only first-period goal at 7:42 by Kwapick. The Cobbers* Steve Baumgartner, assisted by Dave Olson, then opened Concordia scoring in the second period at 15*7. The final period saw Al Hol-te's goal give the Cobbers a 2-1 lead. The lead was short-lived however, when Hamline rallied and tied at 6:45 on a Nordvall goal that got by goalie Randy Penny. The Pipers then battled the Cobbers in a scoreless over-time deadlock, where Concordia could manage only five shots on goal to Hamline* s nine1. In Saturday's game,'Cobbers' co-captain Jeff Olson rifled in two first period goals to help the Cobbers to a 3-2 lead coming into the last period, only to be upset by two last period goals for their second MIAC loss 5-4. Hamline opened the first peri-od with Lueher's goal at 2:01 with the next four goals of the contest coming at two minute intervals, closing the period with a Concordia lead at 3-2 after Chip Ammerman's goal assisted by Cobbers Holte and Samuelson. The second period resulted in 14 Concordia shots on goal but no scoring by either team. The exciting final period open-ed with Hamline's Nordvall scor-ing at 2:31 to tie at 3-3. The combination of Dave Olsen and assisting Steve Baumgartner, the Cobbers' leading two scor-ers, put the Cobbers ahead 4-3 for the go-ahead goal. Hamline, playing with four lines, outlasted the Cobbers and struck with two last period goals, shutting down the Cob-bers, the game winner for the Pipers coming with 7:30 left in the game. Rice was proud of his players'- effort and cited Kevin Johnson, Jeff Olson, Sheldon and Brian Vatnsdal and John Willert's excellent paly. The Cobbers travel to St. Paul this weekend to face the Tom-mies. The contest matches Steve Baumgartner and Dave Olsen of Concordia against two other top conference scorers from St. Tho-mas, Mark Hentges and Bob McEnaney. Rice adds, "St. Thomas is big and tough.1' ThereS a lot more of these around than you might think. And you don't have to just rely on your local newspaper to find them.
