Summary:November 17,2000 www.cord.edu/dept/concord NEWS 3 Paleontologist shares dinosaur secrets with campus Rachel Berg News Editor —-""""—— Homer's theory that dinosaurs were forms of birds, not reptiles. "Nesting is okay if you're a bird, Jack Homer, paleontologist but not if you're a reptile," he and advisor to Steven Spielberg said. for both Jurassic Park films, spoke to an over-capacity crowd in the Centrum Wednesday evening. Homer discussed previ-ous dinosaur discoveries and his Homer also discussed some of the earliest dinosaur discoveries and how very inaccurate they were. "When you're the first to dis-own career, determining what cover something," he said, "you dinosaurs may have actually have less information that any-looked like. Horner noted many of the misconceptions people have about these extinct creatures. For example, they are not the ances-tors of reptiles, but rather those of birds. "Birds are dinosaurs," Homer said. Homer's studies have also demonstrated that dinosaurs did not roam independently one will ever have. You're going to be wrong." One of the first modern dinosaur discoveries was built around its tooth, the first part to be found. A misunderstanding caused scientists to believe the ancient creature was some sort of rhinoceros. Therefore they used the tooth as the dinosaur's horn. Horner said he came to Concordia because he was "They were very social ani- impressed with the school's mals," Homer said. Women begin solo trek across Antarctica QUEEN MAUD LAND, Antarctica (AP) An American polar adventurer and her Norwegian partner snapped on their skis Tuesday and pushed off across the ice and snow of Antarctica to try to become the first women to ski across the world's coldest continent. Before setting off on their three-month journey, Ann Bancroft, 45, of Scandia, Minn., and Liv Amesen, 47, of Oslo, made a satellite telephone call to their expedition's organizers to say they were prepared to start. People at this camp in Queen Maud Land confirmed the pair began skiing in clear weather about 6 a.m. The two had hoped to begin their 2,400 mile journey Nov. 1, but were forced to wait 12 days in South Africa until the Antarctic weather cleared enough to let their plane land. On arriving Monday in Antarctica, the two tested out their equipment, took their sleds loaded with gear and food for a test run and declared themselves ready for their 100-day journey in which they will endure tem-peratures of minus 30 degrees and winds of up to 100 mph. "It feels good to be back in the harness," Bancroft said as she strained against the weight of the sled. "If we get a good start, we'll be real confident." Bancroft and Amesen intend to ski and windsail 12 hours a day and arrive at the South Pole by Christmas, despite their delayed start. If all goes according to plan, they will travel from the South Pole down to the McMurdo Station on the Ross ice shelf, where a boat will wait to take them away. Throughout the journey, the two teachers plan to use high-tech computer equipment to relay their experiences to school-children around the world via the Internet. In 1994, Amesen became the first woman to ski alone and unaided to the South Pole; a 50- day journey. Bancroft was the first woman to ski to both the North Pole and the South Pole. Now they hope to become the first women to ski across the continent without outside assis-tance, a feat completed only by a handful of men. "It's just a huge relief to final-ly get going," Amesen said. American Indian environmentalist and biologist to speak on campus tonight Aleksandra Lubierska Features Editor "Michael Price, an Ojibwe biol-ogist, will examine the connection and the divergences between American Indian thought and phi-losophy [as well as] assumptions of western science," said Dr. Scott Lyons, assistant professor of English who invited Price to come to Concordia and give the lecture. "I believe there is more than one way of looking at our relation-ship with Earth," Price said. He will discuss the questions of research, land use and experimen-tation as well as the ethics of doing so and the politics of it, Lyons said. Price will also discuss "the grow-ing indigenous environmentalist movement and the blending of dif-ferent types of knowledge at today's tribal colleges," Lyons said. Price is very eager to come to Concordia. "One of my goals is to go to different colleges and tell about the tribal colleges and about what we teach here," Price said. And there is a lot to talk about. Price, a member of the Canadian Wikwemikong First Nation, in addition to writing and teaching, has also worked for the American Indian Science and Engineering Society. Currently he is teaching at the Leech Lake Tribal College in Cass Lake ,Minn. Price will speak from 5-7pm tonight in Bishop Whipple 144.
