Summary:4 Anchors aweigh for Semester at Sea NEWS Jessica Crane Concordian Reporter The University of Pittsburgh's Semester at Sea global studies program began its Spring 2002 semes-ter in Havana, Cuba on Jan. 23. Semester at Sea, which is administered by the Institute for Shipboard Education, is an international studies program that visits approximately 10 coun-tries per semester, according to a press release by Julian Asenjo, associate director of enrollment man-agement for the Institute of Shipboard Education. Concordia College has had students attend the Semester at Sea program in the past. However, the program is not affiliated with Concordia, according to Charlie Hovde, administrative assistant of interna-tional education. "I honestly think it's a life-changing experience," said Theron LaFountain, a 2001 Concordia College graduate who attended the Fall 2000 Semester at Sea program. LaFountain said that he had fantastic experiences while on the program. "Just being on the ocean for 60 days is an amaz-are so small and peonic to the rest of the world." During his trip, LaFountain recalls that he saw many things that he will never forget. "An oil tanker ran into the ship I was on," he said. "Probably four cabins were taken out and people's stuff was in the ocean. We were fortunate enough that we were at the mid-morning brunch social." When students are interested in the Semester at Sea program, they first apply to the University of Pittsburgh, the college that offers the program. Then, if the student is accepted, there is paperwork at Concordia that has to be done, according to Hovde. The Semester at Sea program allows a maximum enrollment of 675 students per semester and current-ly has 616 undergraduates, 26 senior citizens and 69 faculty and staff, Asenjo said. All classes offered in the program are fully transferable and offered in var-ious fields of study. Hovde said that there is usually financial aid avail-able for students who plan to study abroad. The financial aid goes to offset the comprehensive fees, according to Hovde, on the Semester at Sea program, which costs $13,750. The comprehensive fees include tuition, housing, transportation and most Combat those post- Valentine's Day blues! Write for the Concordian - it's therapeutic. Call 3826 ing thing," LaFountain said. They placed 13th and 14th in a field of 19 teams, the Concordia squads finished out their season. Concordia brought two complete teams to the tournament, hoping to advance to the national tournament in Des Moines, Iowa. The team placing 14th was composed of what Dr. Max Richardson, the teams' advisor, called "the more experi-enced members." Comprising the six-member team were sophomores Alexis Bylander and Kathleen Curtis, freshmen Jeff Albertson and Kate Sorenson and senior Alison Routledge. The other Concordia team placed 13th in the competition. The eight person team was comprised of: sophomore Adam Bueling, junior Aaron Kjelland, freshmen Julie Robertson, Tara Smith, Tyler Olson, Badar Tareen and Karolina Topolski and senior Maren Anderson. Concordia faced teams from St. Thomas, St. Charles, Marquette and Iowa State. Kjelland was honored in the tournament by receiving the award of Outstanding Attorney and Anderson was honored as an Outstanding Witness. Concordia's mock trial program was more active this year to help prepare them for this difficult com-petition. This was the first year the team partook in tournaments prior to regionals. Competing in two invita-tional and several scrimmages, the team took advantage of the extra experience. "It takes time to develop that kind of championship potential" Richardson said. • "Soy 6*96* If you're a healthy non-smoker, you can earn $240 and up by becoming a PRACS study participant Call 27-PRACS (277-7227) to find out more about our pharmaceutical research!
