Many who started across the Western plains for gold stopped and made their homes along the Mississippi and in the country beyond. Many of these sturdy Pioneers who braved the hardships and dangers of the trail became permanent settlers thruout the West. Scene—Indian Buffalo hunters—A Wagon train on the plains—An I j. ii ii Indian scare — Episode 3. STEAMBOATS ON THE RIVER—1870 Riverboat transportation replaced the trains of crude Red River Carts used to transport supplies, furs and merchandise by the Hudson Bay Fur Company. Navigation on the Red River played an important part in the development of trade and settlement in the Valley.
