STEAMBOATS ON THE RIVER—1870 Riverboat transportation replaced the trains of crude Red River Carts used to transport supplies, furs and merchandise by the Hudson Bay Fur Company. Navigation on the Red River played an important part in the development of trade and settlement in the Valley.
