Description
Summary:Lawton Churches In 1906 the members of the Congregational Church and their friends in the Lawton community worked hard and sacrified to build the first church in Law- ton. The edifice served for many groups for fifty-six years, including Methodist, Episcopalian, Community. In November 1946 a group of persons, interested in forming a Lutheran Church, took charge, because by this time the membership of the other groups had declined to a point where they could no longer function. On June 8, 1949, they had the first Lutheran church service, with student pastor, Raymond Brien, officiating. During the summer Ladies Aid, Sunday School and Luther League were organized. May 1948 was the date of the first confirmation class. Pastor Brien was installed in July 1949 and he served until 1951. In 1949 the Lutherans brought the church for $2,100.00 from the Methodists. In June 1963, eround breaking services for a new building were held, and the building grew so that by November 24 the dedication service was held. Pastors who have served until this time include: Rev. Raymond Brien, Rev. C. T. Hanson, Rev. John Gronli, Rev. Robert Weber, Rev. Jerry Protexter, Rev. Hirdmand, and presently, Rev. Douglas Dobson. Present officers of the congregation are: David Lorenz, president; Mrs. Larry Robinson, secretary; Mrs. Lillian Christian, financial secretary, and Mrs. Earl Miller, treasurer. Lawton Homemakers Club The original Homemakers Club started in Lawton in 1929 with Mrs. E. C. Berndt hosting the first meeting. The first president was Mrs. Clifford Sanborn; secretary-treasurer Mrs. E. A. Lunde, and project leaders, Mrs. E. A. Kelly and Mrs. Alanson Kops. Other charter members were Mesdames C. K. Kops, Rupert Adler, Sigurd Hagen, Albert Sobolik, Bessie Gibbons, R. S. McMorran, E. G. Nicholson, Louis Olson, Oluf Hagen, Wm. Powers and Bob Gavin. The regular program of foods and clothing was used, plus social events which included the husbands, benefits for March of Dimes, school hot lunch program and others. This same club with a turnover of members was active until May 1975 at which time they decided there were too few left to continue. In the meantime, September 1973, a number of young marrieds decided they needed a club. This is the Town & Country Lawtonettes. These 12 eager young women are following the regular program of foods, clothing, and home furnishings, plus sponsoring roller skating as a summer recreation for the youth, proceeds of which were used to purchase dishes and silver to serve 100 people, and given to the Community Club. They packed Easter baskets for shut-ins. A Blood Bank was Bponsored by them, also a family night with a film on Snowmobile Safety, and a Cancer film with a local doctor to lecture and a public health nurse to check blood pre sures. The original officers were Mrs. Dennis Bina, Mrs. Wm. Rysavv and Mrs. David Lorenz. When Mr. Zincowits tore down the old bank building he found the Btuffed lynx and eagle which used to be displayed in Vobayda's store. He brushed I hem off and found that they were in good condition. You can see them in his bar. -7 - Scanned with a Zeutschel Zeta book scanner at 300 dpi. Edited with Multi-Page TIFF Editor.
