In 1965 Mountrail County harvested 3,348,000 bushels of wheat from 124,000 acres; 2,520,000 bushels of durum from 80,000 acres; 1,276,000 bushels of barley from 29,000 acres; 1,890,000 bushels of oats from 35,000 acres; 364,000 bushels of rye from 14,000 acres; and 89,800 tons of hay from 69,000 acres. They range from gently rolling soils with a thick dark brown surface layer called Chestnut and its associated soils with a claypan subsoil (Solonetz), to steeply sloping soils with a thin surface layer called Regosol or Lithosol.
