There are 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Gilbert, Sr, and Anna Hanson Mr. Gilbert Hanson, Sr., was born Oct. 23, 1845, in Gulbransdalen, Norway, near Lillehammer. Mrs. Hanson was born June 29, 1863, at Shager, Norway. He married Anna Branden in 1883. They left their native land and sailed that same year for America and to Vernon County, Viroqua, Wis. Here he worked in the woods and they lived in a log cabin for five years. Hans and Emma were born in Wisconsin, In 1888 they came to Melvin Township, Nelson County, N.D., by covered wagon and homesteaded. Here they lived in a sod house. Evelyn, Ole, Gilbert, Anna, Marie and Hilma were born in the sod house. In 1901 he bought more land adjoining the homestead. It had a two story house. Lena and Tena (twins), Edwin and Ted were born here. To this union 12 children were born. Hans married Lillie Frederikson. Emma married Ole Monson and they had four children. Ole never married. Evelyn married Melvin Borgen, they had two children. Gilbert married Anna Fossie and they had two children. Anna stayed single. Marie married Adolph Frederikson, and they had three children. Hilma married Martin Frederikson, they had two children. Lena married George Kiefat and they are the parents of six children. Tena married William Kiefat. they had nine children. Edwin married Ida Fossee, and were the parents of four children. Ted married Pearl Ross. Mr. Hanson hauled grain to Northwood with oxen which took several days. He would turn his oxen loose and go to sleep in the wagon, he covered himself up with the buffalo coat and large woolen shawl which he used to wrap around himself during severe cold and storms. Often he would wake up to find himself covered with snow. In later years Mrs. Hanson unraveled the scarf and knitted several pairs of stockings and mittens for the younger children. Mrs. Hanson died in 1919 and Mr. Hanson died in 1920. Surviving is one daughter, Hilma Frederikson. One son, Theodore Hanson, of Renton, Wash., passed away in 1985. Chris and Hannah worked on farms in the area until he moved to Larimore in 1902. His first job there was working in the flour mill. In 1904 he married Christi Tiegum, who was also an immigrant from Norway. They had three children, name!' Beatrice. Irene, and Clarence. Christi passed away in 1909 shortly after the birth of their son, Clarence. Lena Hardland, sister of Chris, lived with the family and cared for the children until Chris married Hannah Mortensen in 1914. Four children were born to this union, Edward, Leonard, Helen, and Merle. Chris was employed in the grocery business the majority of the time the family lived in Larimore. In 1920 Chris took a leave from the grocery business to go to the Peace River Country in Canada to take charge of the estate of his brother, Michal who died in the flu epidemic. Chris spent one year farming in Canada, leaving his family in Larimore. Hannah and the three youngest, pre-school children, joined him the next year and they lived there one more year. They endured many hardships and inconveniences during this time as the area was very sparsely settled, neighbors were far apart, the winter days were very short up in that part of the country. The children were approaching school age, so it was decided they move back to Larimore where Aunt Lena and the three older children were holding fort. The following year, 1922, another son, Merle, was born. Chris resumed employment in Larimore Merchantile until the family moved to Petersburg in 1924 where Chris was employed as general manager of the Petersburg Cash Store, then owned by Ed Johnson and H.R. Nicholson. He later became part owner with Mr. Nicholson when Ed Johnson sold his share to Chris and he continued as a general manager until his retirement in 1949. Chris and Hannah were respected citizens of the community, being active in church and its auxiliaries, Sons of Norway and other affairs of the community. Chris passed away in 1969. Hannah passed away in 1981. There are seven children: Edward, Clarkdale, Ariz.; Leonard, Silver Spring, Md.; Helen, Mrs. Ernest Ranstrom, Princeton, Minn.; Merle, Spokane, Wash.; Beatrice, Mrs. Miles Benz, Salton City, Calif.; Irene, Mrs. W.R. Nickerson, Seattle, Wash.; Clarence, Oregon City, Ore. Louis and Anna Hared Louis Hared (1870-1937) was bom at Bergen, Norway, and came to St. James, Minn., in 1891 at the age of 21. In 1899 he married Miss Anna Halvorson at St. James, Minn. Miss Halvorson was born in Oslo, Norway, in 1874 and came to St. James in 1880 at the age of six. Mr. and Mrs. Hared came to Michigan, N.D., in 1905 where they farmed until 1914 and then moved to Petersburg. For a time they operated the West Hotel which is now the P. I. Reiten residence. Later they purchased the City Dray Line which they operated for a number of years. To this marriage six children were born: Mabel (Mrs. W. Jackson), Duluth, Minn.; Anthony, San Diego, Calif., now deceased; Adolph, deceased; Louise (Mrs. Arthur Magnus), Petersburg; Mary (Mrs. Ed Locker) Chicago, 111.; and Laura (Mrs. J. C. Sylvester), Towner, N.D. There are also nine grandchildren and nine greatgrandchildren. Chris and Hannah Hardland Chris Hardland was born in Fitjar, Norway, in 1883. He immigrated to Buxton, N.D., in 1900 at age 17, where he Alfred and Ruth Harmon Alfred (Al) Harmon, son of Roy and Helga (Frederikson) Harmon was born in Petersburg Township.
