Nels and Anna Helgeson Nels Helgeson came to America in 1866 to Goodhue, Minn., and to Center Township where he filed on land in 1882. He married Annie Burkland, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Julius Burkland, in 1892. She was born Sept. 26, 1875. They farmed in Center Township until his death in 1936. Annie moved to McVille the same year and lived in the house her father built many years before until her death on Nov. 2,1960. Lars and Ingeborg Helgeland Lars Helgeland was born April 19, 1864 at Northwood, Iowa. He came with his parents in a covered wagon in 1881 settling along the Sheyenne Valley in Nesheim Township. He married Ingeborg Lotveit on October 5, 1908. She was born in Norway on Aug. 4, 1874, and came to the United The Lars Helgeland Family States in 1907. They moved to McVille in 1920 and lived thereuntil his death on February 27,1928. Mrs. Helgeland passed away on February 3, 1955. They had two children — Gerda, wno died at the age of 18 years, and Esther who still resides in McVille on Baldwin Street. Rev. Michael E. and Jennie M. Helland Michael was born at Fitjar, Norway, on June 16, 1887. Jennie was born near Alexandria, Minn., on Dec. 18, 1894. Michael emigrated from Norway in 1905 and worked on different farms in Griggs County until he left for Minneapolis to attend Augsburg College and Seminary. He was ordained a pastor in the Lutheran Free Church on June 17,1917, on a call from Our Saviors Church in Govan, Sask., Canada, besides five other churches and preaching places, two about 60 miles from home. He married Jennie Christianson on June 1, 1918, and they lived at Govan until the fall of 1921 when they moved back to the United States. They had to come as immigrants as Rev. Helland was not a U.S. citizen. Mrs. Helland was born in Minnesota of Swedish parents, lived .•d 1 Rev. Michael E. and Jennie M. Helland in Canada and was a citizen of Norway which she had never seen, as at that time a wife lost her United States citizenship if she married a foreigner. They became citizens of the United States in April 1928. Michael was born in Canada and is at present living at home. Philip was born in Canada. He and his wife Ruth live at Burnsville, Minn. It was a big tragedy when their daughter, Mary, age 17, drowned in 1975. Jean and Jeannette live at Sioux Falls, S.D., where he is employed by City Bank. Erling, Dorothy and family live in a suburb of Cleveland, Ohio, where he is a pastor. Florence and Dennes Borman, her husband, live at Montevideo, Minn., where they both teach school. Hellands have 12 grandchildren and five great­grandchildren. Rev. Helland retired from the ministry in June 1960 and they together with Mildred moved to McVille where they had bought the Drew house from Henry Styve. Rev. Helland died in January 1978 and is buried in the New Luther Valley cemetery. Mrs. Helland and Mildred are still living in the same house which was built by Mr. Drew in 1911. John and Sina Hendrickson John Albert Hendrickson was born July 16,1874, at Fort Dodge, Iowa, the son of Emanuel (Edward) and Emma Hendrickson. He homesteaded north of Starkweather, N.D., in the late 1880’s. Later he sold the homestead and went into the implement business in McVille in 1917. He married Sena Erickstad, daughter of Elias and Johanna Erickstad, at the Bergan Lutheran Church, Garske, N.D. Feb. 15, 1905. She was born Dec. 25, 1884, the first white child born in the Garske, N.D., area. John was active in the K.P. Lodge and the Lutheran Church, and Sena an expert seamstress, was a charter member of the American Legion Auxiliary, a Gold Star mother, and a member of the Ladies Aid for 54 years. She was also active in the Pioneer Daughters of America. They moved to Devils Lake in 1942, where Mr. Hendrickson was associated with the Lake Chevrolet Motor Co. They were the parents of seven children: Ernest, deceased, 10-21-57; Anne Blegstad, Minneapolis; Stella Anderson, deceased, 10-3-60; Floyd, deceased, 10-21-30; John Leslie, Carrington, N.D.; Howard, deceased, 5-20- 78; William, Brainerd, Minn.
