Summary:Henry Lians. Mr. Greenland was active in community and civic affairs and served as Aneta’s mayor for many years. He served on the school board, the Aneta Commercial Club, secretary-treasurer of the Aneta Fire Dept., and was a trustee of Sundahl Lutheran Church for many years. Mrs. Hattie Greenland married George J. Spangberg of Grand Forks, N.D., in 1947. Mr. and Mrs. O. M. Greenland Ralph O. and Mabel Grotte Ralph 0. Grotte was born at Northwood, N.D., the son of Rasmus and Olga (Engen) Grotte. He attended school at Northwood and enlisted in the Army in 1935. When war was declared, he served in the European Theater of operations. While in the service he was awarded a Purple Heart and Cluster. He was discharged with the rank of Captain in 1946. He returned to Northwood and married Mabel (Olson) Anderson in 1946. Mabel, daughter of O. F. and Ragna Olson, was born and raised in rural Northwood. She graduated from Northwood High School, attended college and taught in rural schools for several years. She married Kermit M. Anderson from Larimore in 1938. He passed away from a heart attack at the age of twenty-nine. To this union one son, Kenneth Myrl, was born and he now resides in Reno, Nevada. After Kermit’s death, Mabel went back to teaching and also worked as a bookkeeper for Red River Valley Telephone Co. The Grottes moved to Aneta in 1953 where Ralph was in business and later employed by the school. Mabel returned to teaching and taught four years in Rugh Township and sixteen years in the Aneta School. They have two children: Steven Curt lives in Devils Lake, and Julie, married to Charles Lippert, lives in Aneta. Ralph is a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Mabel is a member of the GFWC Aneta Civic Club, the American Legion Auxiliary and Sundahl ALCW. They are members of Sundahl Lutheran Church. John G. and Bertha Gunderson John was born in St. Ansgar, Iowa, on Feb. 12, 1872. He came to North Dakota in 1890 and took a position as teacher in Portland, N.D. In 1891 he started working for Hogan Milling Co. at Northwood as cashier and store manager. In 1896 he and Mr. Linwell of Northwood established the Aneta State Bank at Aneta. He also had extensive farming interests in this area. Mr. Gunderson served as mayor and alderman of Aneta for several years. He was an active Republican, served a term as state senator, and served on the University Board of Regents for four years. He was president of the school board for 26 years, seeing the school grow from a one-room school, to eight grades and a first class hieh school. Mr. Gunderson always gave generously of nis time, money and prestige to furthering the varied educational, social and moral phases of local life. In 1897, John was married to Miss Bertha Magoris of Larimore. To them were born five children: Thelma, Alice, Laura, John G., Jr., and a daughter, Doris, who died when young. Mr. Gunderson died on Feb. 10, 1924, and Bertha died in 1931 at the age of 59 years. John G. Gunderson Henry A. and Adline Gustafson Henry and Adeline Gustafson came to Aneta in 1959 where Henry began employment with the Farmers Union Elevator. Henry was born at Finley, N.D., in 1924, and Adline was born at Coleharbor, N.D., in 1934. They were married June 24,1953, in Ottawa Church. The Gustafsons have seven children: Debrah (Mrs. Don Fuglem), Aneta; Mavis (Mrs. Gerald Graving), Binford; Lyle, married to Julie Ostmo, Jamestown, N.D. Marlys (Mrs. Verne Arlien), Binford; Loren, married to Sarah Arnold, Aneta; and twins, Brent and Brenda, Aneta. Henry has been employed at the elevator for twenty-four years. Adline began work at the Good Samaritan Center in 1972 and presently is the supervisor of dietary at the center. The family is members of Sundahl Lutheran Church. Henry is a World War II veteran and a member of the American Legion and fire department. Adline is a member of the Legion Auxiliary. They have one grandson and five granddaughters. Midell and Lucy Hagen Midell and Lucy (Lippert) Hagen were married in August 1950 at Hope, N.D. Midell was born March 26,1902, while Lucy was born on Nov. 8,1910. Both were born near Aneta. Midell farmed for several years in the 1920s after which he sold out and then worked on farms and odd jobs until 1935. He also worked in Grand Forks and Kelso, Wash., until he enlisted in the Navy in 1942. After his discharge in 1945, he was a rural mail carrier for 25 years. Lucy worked as a waitress for a number of years. In 1953, Lucy became a stroke victim leaving her paralyzed on one side.
