Kjerstie would card and spin wool and knit mittens, stockings and other clothes for the family. Sever had a large potato patch. They planted a grove of trees behind the house they built. He arrived in New York City in 1874 and they settled near Farmington, Minn. In 1882 the Aslaksons and other families came to North Dakota in ox-drawn wagons, bringing 7 head of cattle along with them. Ole Aslakson planted a tree claim in Nelson County, south of McVille on the southeast quarter of section 34, and built a sod house there. After a few years he obtained lumber for a house from the Lee Mill on the Sheyenne River. This house was one of the first wood frame houses in Nelson County. A few years later, they moved this house to Griggs County, northwest quarter, section 8. Their two tree claims can still be seen. The Aslaksons were among the early pioneers who started a Lutheran congregation south of Kloten. This group split and formed West Prairie and Valley Grove Churches. 790 Scanned with a Czur book scanner at 300 dpi. Edited in Adobe Acrobat Pro
