Description
Summary:THE LATE JACOB IRION Jacob Irion was born at Postal, Bessarabia, South Russia, May 2, 1859. He was the son of Fredrick and Louisa (Heidinger) Irion. On January 1, 1883 he married Elizabeth Schoetle. He was a blacksmith in Russia. The strict army rules, the insufficiency of land, and three years of sickness for Mr. Irion, which used most of his earnings, were the incentives for their immigrating to America. With their five sons, they left South Russia on May 4, 1 897 for Bremen Harbor in Germany, where they waited two days for the ship which carried them to New York in seven days. They arrived in Kulm, North Dakota, May 22, 1897, where Jacob Elhard, a brother-in-law of Mr. Irion, met them and took them to his home in a horse-drawn wagon. Nine families came from Postal, Russia together. Mr. Irion paid Henry Putman $120 for relinquishment of his homestead rights and on June 2, 1897 they filed on that claim (Raney Township, Section 30) nine miles southwest of the present site of Jud. A sod house and well were already there for them. They purchased a team of horses from George Gackle of Kulm and took home supplies: 100 pounds of flour, which cost $1.50; 17 pounds of sugar for $1; and 2 pounds of coffee for 14c and also some chicory to prolong their coffee. Later they used roasted rye and barley with chicory for coffee. Eleven children were born to them: Gottfried, Kulm; Emanuel, Great Falls, Montana; (Samuel, Marsh, Montana;) George, Fargo; Ted, Kulm,- Otto, Fredonia; Ernest, Lodi, California,- Lydia, Entwist- le Alberta, Canada; Bertha Fode, Jud; and Emilia, Mrs. Albert Fode, Jud. One infant daughter passed away in Russia. Their pioneer problems were much the same as those which confronted all immigrants: money shortage, difficulty of breaking the sod for fields, fire and weather elements. Mr. Irion's health improved so greatly in America that they farmed their homestead until 1927, when they retired and bought a home in Kulm. Jacob Irion passed away March, 1940 in Kulm; Elizabeth Irion passed away in Kulm, April, 1946. They were of the Congregational faith.
