His parents died when he was about four years old and he went to live with an uncle at Mont­gomery, O. At the age of fifteen he began a course of literary training at the University of Wooster where he remained four years. (Com­mencing his medical studies, five years later he graduated into a full fledged M. I)., receiving the degree from the Kentucky School of Medi­cine, Louisville, Ky., one of the oldest incorpo­rated medical colleges in the United States. After graduating he had the advantage of further medical training at the New York Polytechnic and the University of Berlin, Germany. Prom 1885 to 1887 he was located at Minnewaukan, N. !)., and returned to the same location in I860 and has been here for ten years. He was mar­ried to Miss Nettie Kyle, of Cincinnatii, O., in 1887, and seven daughters have blessed their union. He has served as coroner for Benson county for several terms, also as Commissioner of Insanity and Superintendent of the Board of Health. He is examiner for all the principal life insurance companies, an elder of the Presby­terian church, an A. O. U. W., an \I. W. A., a Chapter Mason and a man valued for his sterling qualities and medical and surgical ability. His office is one door east of Cub bison’s drug store and was erected since our view of Main street was taken. CltAlGUK & GIBUS. This is another new firm formed by the coming together of two well known people, J. It. Craigue and Prank Gibbs. They carry on the fruit, con- ‘fecliouery and grocery business, and keep the best grades of canned goods, believing that it pays to handle a good article. Refreshing and cooling drinks are also kept in stock. Mr. Gibbs is from Bird Island, Minnesota, aipl came to Minnewaukan in 1891. W. J. AI.L1CN. Mr Allen has been some thirteen years in the district, pursuing the honorable vocation of a farmer. Lately lie embarked in the mercantile business also, in the premises on the ‘north-east corner of Paster avenue and B street. He carries groceries, provisions, fancy goods, etc., and is working up a large trade under the careful man­agement of Mr. Salisbury. T!*>I M A II ANY. 'I'u this gentleman belongs the honor of be­ing one of the first citizens of the Minnewaukan district-, and one of the first to commence build­ing operations in the village, having erected a livery stable 27x50 ft. in November, 1883. He has continued in the livery business ever since, always adding to his stables and keeping the best of horses. He has also handled agricultural implements, carriages and buggies for many years, and no one is heller known to the travel­ing public, and fa ruling community. He is agent, lor the McCormick company, and his yearly out­put of reapers and mowers is surprisingly large* His office, warehouse and stables are shown in our view of B street looking west, the stables on the right baud corner and the warehouse and office on the lelt, one door west of Hethen’s photograph gallery and opposite whiqh he is standing. Mr. Mahanv also owns a fine farm just west of the town. As a citizen of the town he is always ready to do his part (or its advancement. As a member of the Catholic church.-lie. has spared neither lime nor money in helping to advance its interests iu Minnewaukan. To him more than any other is due the erection of a handsome church a couple of years ago. Personally, Tim is. one of the most genial ol Irishmen, takes a pride in dogs and fast horses, and dearly loves hunting ami fishing, being in great demand by sportsmen during the hunting season. Mr. Mahany form­erly lived in northern Wisconsin. JOH S T. MO K It IS. Mr. Morris is a native of the District of Co­lumbia. but was raised in Benson county and considers himself one of its oldest settlers. He came to Minnewaukan in 1896, where he has fol­lowed the business of tonsorial artist, having shaved and shorn most, every one in the district many times and oft. and few men in Minnewau-knn are better known or more popular. He takes a deep interest in whatever pertains to the welfare of the town and fills the important posi­tion of secretary of the school board, taking a commendable pride in educational matters.
