He went to Canada 1858 until 1872; he went to St. Clair, Mich., farmed there until 1881 when he came to Griggs Co. He married 1st in 1859, Mary Brown who was born in England, died 1861. McCulloch Family WILLIAM THOMAS McCULLOCH (1842-1924), born at Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, the son of James and Elizabeth McCulloch, moved to Perth Co., Ont. and lived there until 1866; married, 1866, Sarah A. Sansburn (1848-1908), daughter of Andrew and Elizabeth Sansburn, came to Sanborn, N. Dak. 1880; was carpenter there for Cooper, 1881, and for others in Griggs. He was active in local school district, Populist Movement and served in N. Dak. Legislature. Children. JAMES A. (1869-1927), married 1903, Helen Rothert (1883-). Children. Gordon and Royal. ELIZABETH J. (1871 —), married 1899, George Pratt. Children: Floyd Pratt, married daughter of Alfred Langford;—2 children, Bernice, married Alfred Brudvig—2 children. WILLIAM A. Children: George, married Esther Linden; Wallace, married Sylvia S. Jensen; Richard. MARGARET (1878-), married, 1902, Joe Bailey. Children: Hazel and Robert. NORMAN (1883-1922), born near Jessie, N. Dak., married Mrs. Georgiana McDaniel Tipton, widow of a Baptist Minister. Her children: Bert and Winona Tipton. Church, Robert Martin, all from St. Mary's, Canada. Dr. George F. Newell Dr. George F. Newell was born in 1816 in Vermont. He was educated at the University of Vermont, and the Casselton medical college. He moved to Waterford, Racine Co., Wis. where he was a doctor for nearly forty years, with the exception of two years when he served as surgeon of the 15th Wisconsin regiment of Volunteers. He was mustered out in June, 1864. In May 1883 the doctor came to Cooperstown where he started the first drug store. He gave up practice except in surgical cases. The active country practice was attended to by Dr. Theo. F. Kerr. In 1888 he sold his drug store to S. Almklov, and it has been in that family ever since. Dr. Newell had a stroke in 1890 and returned to Rochester, Wisconsin where he died in 1898. Mr. Syverson built a hotel in 1899 (in 1957, the Rebecca Home) and named it the Newell House in honor of Dr. Geo, F. Newell. Retzlaff Family MICHAEL RETZLAFF (1819-1896), born at and married Wilhel- mine Retzlaff (1833-1917) at Pommern, Prussia; went to Iowa in 1875, and Griggs Co. in 1881. They were living on 30-147-59 in 1882. Children: JULIUS E. (1849-1932), born at and married, 1872, Henrietta (1847-1936) at Pommern, Prussia, to Iowa in 1875, to Griggs 1881. Children: Otto E. (1874-1952), married Helen Steffen (1884-1907). Daughter: Mrs. Lewis (Helen) LaPlant. Orry C. (1882—), married Emma Beier (1883—). Son and daughter. Henry E. (1886-). Mrs. Antoinette ("Tony") 1877-. Rudolph (1884—). Mrs. Alex (Emily) Iverson. HENRY (- 1894), came to Cooperstown in 1883; married Mrs. Minnie L. Retzlaff. Children: Frank (1875-1938), married Nellie Brown; Laura (1876-1915), married James H. Sinclair; Walter, died 1934 in Montana. May (1873-1949) FERDANAND A., married Martha Koch, daughter of Wm. Koch. He died at 36 and left 3 children: Ida, married, 1900, Charles Arndt; Arthur Retzlaff; Mrs. married second William Arndt. Their chilldren: Max Arndt, Mrs. Alice Wyman. CHARLES (1853-1921), married Marie Freadrich (1862-1952), who was birn in Wis. In 1882 Charles was on 31-147-59, had a house. Children: Emil (1883-1947), married Elizabeth Rickford. Children: Vivian, Cleona, Harvey; Alvina (1884—), married Otto Christianson. Adolph (1887 1951), married Laura Ebenteier ( — 1950), lived in Griggs Co. until 1922; went to Wis., died there.
