Opal married Pete Horvath (Sr.) of Joliet, Illinois. They had five sons: Pete, Jr.; Gordon; Robert; David; and Ronald. Pete Jr. lives at Port Charles, New York and his son Peter Jayson. Gordon and his wife Maxine live in Fargo and have two sons, Mike and Mark. David and his wife Joan live at Renton, Washington, and have one daughter, Johanna Lynn. Robert and his wife Cathy live in Minot, ND, and they have six children, two daughters, Sharye and Stepheny; and four sons: Robert, Bradly, Brent, and Blair. Ronald and his wife Kathie live in Omaha, Nebraska, where both are employed in medical services. They have no children. Avery married Alice Krueger of Sheldon and they had three children: Kent, Marlys (Mrs. Gordon Monson), and Marilyn. Kent and his wife Shirley have three children: Thomas, Michael and Jan Marie. Noble Doeling family grew up on the family farm (SEVS-11 Casey) and it is still owned by the Doeling family. Noble and his wife Helen Hofmann of Enderlin moved on to the farm in 1945 as newlyweds when Nobel was discharged from the army after spending 52 months traveling around the world via San Francisco, Guadalcanal, Australia, Fiji, China, Burma, India (as Merrill's Marauders) and arrived home through New York; he has a Purple Heart and Bronze Star. Noble and Helen have four daughters: Connie (Mrs. A.A. Skwiertz, Jr.) who is a dietician in Baltimore, Maryland, and her husband a lawyer; Teresa (Mrs. James Dramstad) who is a Physical Education major and a farm wife in Cooperstown, ND, with two children; Barbara (Mrs. Glen Smith) of Rockford, Illinois who is a Physical Education teacher and her Canadian husband, and engineer; Alaine (Mrs. Robert Toso) who is an Elementary Teacher with two children and her husband teaches in Glenburn, ND. Noble is currently the postmaster at Dunseith and a square dance caller who has sung his way into the hearts and dancing toes of many twirling couples across the state. DORRANCE The lineage of the Dorrance family is traced back to Elder William Brewster who came to America on the Mayflower in 1620. Beth, Alan and Inez are the tenth generation from him. Their great, great grandfather, Samuel Dorrance fought in the Revolutionary War, their great grandfather Joseph Dorrance fought in the War of 1812. Their grandfather George Dorrance, Sr. was born in Vermont, his wife Hannah Putnam was born in New York. George's son, Ralph served in the Civil War. George Arthur Dorrance, Jr. was born May 8, 1858, near Faribault, Minnesota. He married Inez Luellia McCollum who was born July 13,1883 near Worthington, Minnesota. The parents of Inez McCollum were Henry and Mary Parsons McCollum; Mary was born in Pennsylvania, and her father Thomas Parsons was born in New York state and was a pioneer newspaper man in Worthington, Minnesota. George and Inez were married on a blizzardy December 24, 1902 at the home of Inez' parents near Faribault, Minn. They came to the Sheldon area in the fall of 1905, settling on E/2-28 Highland which is approximately 41/2 miles north and V4 mile west of Sheldon. Four children were born to George and Inez at their farm home: Lucy Marie Dorrance was born October 16, 1910; Lois Elizabeth (called Beth) Dorrance was born November 7, 1914; Inez May Dorrance was born May 5, 1917; and George Alan (called Alan) Dorrance was born on May 22, 1919. All four children attended Highland #47, a rural school about VA miles straight east of the Dorrance farm, and all four Dorrance children graduated from Sheldon high school. Lucy had cousins in Farmville, Virginia who persuaded her to come there to attend a teacher's college. After completing her two years of teacher's training she taught schools in Bedford county, Virginia. During her fourth year of teaching she contracted typhoid fever and passed away. Beth attended a Mankato, Minnesota, commercial college and later received her bachelor's degree from the American University in Washington, D.C. In 1940 she went to Washington and worked for the government until her reitrement in 1973. She and Roger Howrigan were married in 1959; they had no children. Mrs. Inez Dorrance Inez May attended Valley City State Teacher's College and taught in rural schools in Ransom county. She and Martin Kaspari were married in 1940. They have two girls, Sally and Susan. Following Martin's death in 1953, Inez resumed teaching. In 1961 she started work in the Ransom County Register of Deeds office, was elected to that office in 1962 and served until her term expired in 1967. She and Ernest Bergeson 230 Dorrance family. Back: Beth, Alan, Inez Bergeson and in front is mother, Inez Dorrance. were married in 1963. Sally Kaspari and Larry Brash were married in 1964. He is a Veterinarian and they are now living near Rutland, ND, with their five children: Carol, Nicole, Beth, Laura, and Martin. Susan, single, for the past ten years has been teaching at American military bases overseas. She has been in Japan, the Philippines, Iceland, and is presently teaching at the Geissen American Junior High School near Frankfurt, Germany. Alan served as a navigator of a B-17 bomber in World War II. After it was shot down while bombing a submarine base in German-held territory, he became a German prisoner of war for two years. After his return he completed his education at Rocky Mountain College in Billings, Montana. He taught in several Montana towns and is now retired and living in Billings. He and Marimavis Evans were married in 1950. They have three sons: Paul, George Alan, and Craig. Paul and his wife live in Helena, Montana, where they are both employed by the school system there. They have two children: Evan and Brenna. George Alan, single, is a pipe fitter. Craig and his wife Rhonda live in Billings where Craig drives a truck. They have one daughter, Shanna. George Dorrance passed away in April, 1926. A year later his widow Inez and the four children moved into Sheldon. Inez continued to live there until 1963 when she went to Lisbon where she passed away in 1971. The Dorrance's mode of travel when they lived on the farm was by horse and buggy. Lucy drove to high school this way much of the time and one school year she drove the horse and buggy the entire year. This trip to Sheldon usually took an hour each way. In winter Mrs. Dorrance would sometimes hitch a team of horses to a bob sled so she and the children could attend the Sunday School Christmas program or some other activity in town.
