THE ARNTSON HOUSE Submitted by Lillian Arntson Wall One of the older homes in Sheldon is located directly south of the United Methodist Church, and it is nearly a century old. It is situated on Lots 14 and 15, Block 5 in the Rudd & Sheldon Addition of Sheldon. According to records in the Register of Deeds Office in Lisbon the first transaction was dated April 21, 1883 when Edward E. Sheldon sold it to Wellington Gram. In the meantime Wellington B. Gram passed away and his widow, Hannah Elizabeth Gram sold it to Mary L. Larson, wife of O.L. Larson, dated November 5, 1887. It is interesting to note that when one of the occupants took some boards off the house in later years that a piece of paper was found that was dated 1883, and the carpenter wrote his name as Krueger. The next transaction was dated May 27, 1913 when Mary L. Jostad, nee Mary L. Larson, widow, sold it to George Cullen for $1600.00.fhree days later George and Barbara Jane Cullen, his wife, sold it to James K. Thornton & Gertrude M. Thornton, husband and wife, or the survivor, for the same amount. Mr. Thornton was a Sheldon teacher at that time. Then on April 15, 1916 James K. & Isola Stocum Thornton, husband and wife (Gertrude M. Thornton, the first wife being dead) sold it to Nicolay E. Arntson and the consideration was $1500.00 Neuman Arntson remembers this transaction and that the person that my father dealt with was Tom Wiper. This house was owned by the Arntson family for 47 years. Nicolay E. Arntson and Mary Arntson continued to live on their farm in Owego Township, but our entire family spent the winters of 1918 & 1919 and then 1921 & 1922 in this house . We were five miles away from the Owego Consolidated School which we attended while living on the farm so it was a twenty-mile trip each day with horses to get to school. As we grew older we could do our own driving part of the time and later there was a school bus part of the time. So this house became "our home away from home" as we used it during the school year. My mother as well as an aunt used to live with us when we were younger during the school term. In the fall of 1941 my folks were preparing to move to Sheldon to retire, but in the meantime my father passed away on August 31,1941. Then for about 18 years my mother spent the summer months there and she spent the winters with one of her children and their family. There were some years that it was owned by us that we had renters. Some of the renters that I can recall were the C.C. Howell family, the Oscar Wieg family and the Ervin 190 Fraase family. No doubt there were others. According to a warranty deed dated March 4, 1963 the heirs of Nicolay and Mary Arntson sold it to Delores Schimming. Central heating and a bathroom were installed during that time. Delores Schimming sold it to Ken and Janet Lewis October 7, 1965. The present owners are Edwin and Ella Kval who purchased it June 30,1975 from Ken and Janet Lewis. So this is the history of one of Sheldon's older homes. NICKOLAIS ARNTSON Jonelle Johnson was born March 27, 1849 in Hemness, Helgeland, Norway which is nestled between the ocean and the mountain with an eternal scent of pine filling the air. She left Norway in 1869 and married Nickolais Arntson and settled on a farm at Prairie Farm, Wis. where their son, Andrew J. was born on Nov. 3, 1877? Andrew fell from the wagon and was run over with no serious after effects on their journey to Dakota Territory in 1880. Nickolais and Jonelle settled in Barrie Twp. Richland County near Kindred, ND. Nickolais passed away in 1908 and in 1910 Mrs. Arntson retired and moved to Sheldon where she resided until 1929, then moved to Moorhead to live with her daughter, Mrs. E.B. Eide. Nickolais and Jonelle raised five children: Andrew J.; Anna (Mrs. Olson who had one son, now deceased); Nickolina (Mrs. E.B. Eide); a daughter who married H.H. Gronbeck; Nettie who married Monte C. Adams (q.v.) plus two children of their son Andrew J. Arntson, Neuman and Aurora. Andrew J. Arntson married Annette Otterson of Kindred and they had two children: Neuman (now deceased) of Valley City; and Aurora (Mrs. Urban Woodbeck, Sr.) of Lisbon, ND; both are 1922 Sheldon graduates. Annette Arntson died when her baby was born and five years later Andrew married Marie Johnson of Havana, ND, and they are the parents of three children: Leonore (Mrs. Calvin Jenson) of Milwaukee, Oregon, a 1927 SHS graduate; Arnold (now deceased) a 1930 SHS grad; and Nina Mae. Andrew was a cashier in the Farmers State Bank until his death in 1918. Arnold and his widowed mother lived in the present Tillie Bueling house. Neuman married Francis Cook and had three children: Newell of Leavenworth, Wash; Jonelle Suhr of Page, ND, and Rhea Arntson of Valley City, ND. Aurora and Urban have two sons: Urban Jr. and Joel Gary. Leonore and Calvin Jenson had three children: Cheryl and David both of Seattle, Wash, and Janis Pinniger of Portland, Ore. Arnold lived at Portland, Oregon and maried Mary Graf and had twins: Morry Arntson and Jonelle Arntson Fairchild, both of Portland; Nina Mae married Bill Skarberg and lives at Portland Oregon. Nickolina Arntson Eide had six children: Kermit Eide of Moorhead; Luther, deceased; Adora Eide Anderson of Colorado; Adelaide Eide of Moorhead; Virginia Eide Gronlund Scanned with a Zeutschel Zeta book scanner at 300 dpi.
