Description
Summary:granddaughter of Lars Bue, original founder of the church. Clara and Oliver passed away in 1984. Mr. and Mrs. Lars 0. Bue and family the editor of a paper called "Trapper's Weekly." In 1890 he invested in a stock of general merchandise and did a prosperous business in that line in his country store. He owned 240 acres of valuable land and in 1898 erected a fine residence. Lars was married to Olina Mikkelson in 1883. She was born at Northwood, Iowa, in 1860, where the family lived a number of years. During the summer of 1880, the Mikkelsons left for Dakota by covered wagons, one drawn by a yoke of oxen and the other by a team of horses, driving a herd of cattle along with them. Driving the cattle was a job assigned to the children. Mr. Torger Mikkelson took a claim and settled with his family on a farm by the Sheyenne River south of McVille. They were the first settlers to arrive in the community and built the first log house in Nelson County in 1880. This log house is in Lakota on the grounds of the courthouse. It was in that home of Torger Mikkelson that a group of settlers in that immediate area met with Pastor I. L. Lundeby on Feb. 5, 1882, (two days before the Sheyenne congregation was organized) and decided to organize a church. In the group besides Torger Mikkelson were Roliav Johnson, Ole and Andrew Olson, Sam Samson, Anfin Helgeland and Aad Rauland. To Mr. Mikkelson was given the honor of naming the new congregation, and he chose to call it "Luther Valley" which name it still bears. Lars and Olina had eleven children: Clara, Oscar, Gilbert, Albert, Nels, Clarence, Oliver and Ludwig (twins), Oliver (2nd), Clarence (2nd), and Clara (2nd). Lars was one of the organizers of Bergen Township and was elected township clerk. He was a schoolteacher, and he was a delegate to the first Republican convention in Nelson County and attended most of the county conventions plus three state conventions. Lars died in 1902, and Olina died in 1936.
