Summary:On Christmas eve he would walk across the field to ring the bell for Christmas Eve at 4 p.m. Then he would stop in at the Erick Sundre farm home on the way and have a visit with them over a cup of coffee which he enjoyed. He served on the church council for many years and Field Township assessor for several years. When he was about 12 yrs. old he helped his father break sod by driving one horse hitched to a one bottom plow with two handles he had to guide at the same time. For several years he kept this plow painted up and on display. He also was a fireman on a steam engine threshing rig and he would have to get up at 3 a.m. and some mornings it was pretty cold. Juline was active in Our Saviors ALCW, served as president and always enjoyed serving on the different committees for the Lutefisk suppers which they served for many years and cooked many pots of coffee and baked many dozens of lefse and flatbread, like so many of her neighbor ladies also did. She also enjoyed helping on committees for silver weddings, golden weddings, etc. They were parents of one daughter, Jennie, who was born Sept. 25, 1914 and married Oren Hillebrand on June 4, 1939. There were two grandchildren, Jo Claire who was married to Robert Iverson June 28, 1964 and have seven children: Jolayne, Martin, Robin Jo, Juliane, John, Lisa Jo and Vickie Jo and live at Edinburg, N.D. Dennis married Louis Hadney on Sept. 30,1972 and have two sons: Chad and Chris and they live in Petersburg. Juline, like the other neighbor women, would have breakfast ready for thrashers around 5:30, plus sending forenoon and afternoon lunches and dinner and supper each day. She also milked cows by hand. Electric conveniences did not exist for many years. Christ was a resident at McVille Friendship Manor for V/2 years and died Aug. 28, 1969. Juline was a resident there for 9M> years. She broke her right hip three weeks before she died on Aug. 27, 1977. Elmer Ruse Elmer Ruse was born Jan. 17, 1892 in Field Township to parents Syver and Guri (Bergene) Ruse. He lived with his parents and farmed in Field Township all his life. He worked at the A.S.C. office at Lakota, N.D. for several years. He was never married. He died Sept. 3, 1962. Glenn Orwick is the present owner of this farm. Martin Ruse Martin Ruse was born Nov. 25, 1906 in Field Township to parents Syver and Guri (Bergene) Ruse. He lived with his parents and farmed in Field Township all his life. He was never married. He died May 3, 1947. Syver and Guri Ruse Syver K. Ruse was the son of Knut and Anne Ruse, and was born Sept. 29,1859 in Etnedalen, Valdres, Norway. He came to America in 1879 and to North Dakota in 1881 where he homesteaded in Field Township in 1882. He became a United States Citizen on June 2,1888. On March 24,1889, he married Guri Bergene at Portland, N.D. Guri was also born in Etnedalen, Valdres, Norway on Dec. 15, 1863 to parents Andreas and Eli Knutson Bergene. both Guri's parents came to the United States. Her father died June 20. 1887 near Madison, Wis. Her mother lived in Field Township for a short while. She died May 22, 1905 at Portland, N.D. and is buried in Perry Cemetery in rural Portland. Syver and Guri lived and farmed in Field Township all their lives. They were parents of seven children: Christ, Elmer, Emma (Mrs. Elmer Larson), Anne (Mrs. George Nelson), Clara (Mrs. Albert Orwick), Ansoph (Mrs. Fred Orwick) and Martin. There were eight grandchildren. Syver died July 16, 1939 and Guri died July 23, 1935. Like other pioneers they worked hard during their lifetime and they were active in church and community activities. Syver Ruse family. Back row (1-r): Ansoph, Anne, Christ, Aimer, Emma, Clara, Grandpa Syver, Martin and Guri Ruse. Peter and Elna Selberg Peter Selberg homesteaded the NWV< of Sec. 30 in Field Township in 1890. Elna was formerly married to Wm. Polis in Wisconsin. They had two children, William Carl Polis and Eliza. Wm. Polis, Sr. died in Wisconsin and Elna came with her two children to East Grand Forks in 1881. It is believed she met Peter there. They were married and moved to his home in Field Township in 1882. She was active in the community and served as a midwife to many. She died June 1, 1903 after a lingering illness and is buried in Our Saviors Cemetery. Bill Polis married Emma Helgeland in 1892. They had two little children who died in infancy and are also buried in Our Saviors Cemetery. Bill hewed out stone markers to mark their little graves. He later moved to Nesheim Township where he farmed and raised a large family. Eliza married Carlson and lived in Lakota. Bill and Eliza are both deceased. Peter sold the farm to Lars Naas and moved to Big Falls, Minn. There he was accidentally killed by falling into an open well June 16, 1911. He was a brother of Mrs. Nils Nyberg, Sr. Roy Knudson, son of Orphie and Olaf Knudson, is the present owner of the farm. Olenus and Ovedia Sigdahl Olenus Sigdahl was born to parents Thomas and Anna (Fevold) Sigdahl in Lee Township, Nelson Co., N.D. Ovedia (Fjeld) is the daughter of Ole O. and Randi Fjeld. They were married in Lakota on July 26, 1933. Ole and Ovedia lived and farmed with Ole Fjeld until 1943 when they bought the farm and have lived there ever since with the exception of five winters in the early 1950s when they lived in Bremerton, Wash. They visited their daughter, Merley and other relatives in the Portland, Ore. area and also Tacoma, Wash. They retired in 1964 but still enjoy their farm home.
