Summary: | He came to the Petersburg area in 1881 and took squatters' rights on land eight miles northeast of Petersburg. In 1882 he homesteaded a different quarter after the township was surveyed and opened to homesteading. The same year 1882 he brought his wife Rhoda and five children to his homestead, where four more children were born. Only five of the nine children grew to maturity. Jennie, Lomina, George, Willie, and Frank, all now deceased. John Nash Sr. died Jan. 30, 1907 and his wife on Feb. 23, 1915. Willie Nash (son) farmed the land 1907-1924 Willie Centennial Nash was born Oct. 4, 1876 near Faribault, Minn, and came to Nash Township with his parents in 1882. He homesteaded on a quarter of land across the road from his father's homestead. After his father's death, Willie farmed both quarters for several years, later buying his father's quarter. He married Marie Anderson in 1906 and six children were born to them. Ethel (Mrs. Henry Mork) Petersburg; John V. Nash, Lakota; Emma (Mrs. Edward Wurgler) York, N.D.; Earl Nash (Good Samaritan Home) Lakota, N.D.; Rose (Mrs. Ralph Garland) Rock Island, Texas; and Minnie (Mrs. Charles Wurgler) York, N.D. In the spring of 1916 Willie moved the old house and dug a new basement and built a new house on the same place where his father's house had been built, Willie Nash passed away May 1, 1924. John V. Nash (grandson) 1924-1980 The family continued to live on the farm after Willie Nash passed away, and John V. Nash continued to farm the original homestead of John C. Nash Sr. and his father's quarter. He continued to live on the farm until 1980, when he bought a house in Lakota. Ardell Brueckner 1980- When John Nash moved to Lakota he rented the farm to Ardell and Nancy (Welte) Brueckner and they moved onto the homestead. Ardell and Nancy Brueckner have since purchased the Willie Nash Estate and will continue to live on the home farm. Ardell is the son of Harold and Vivian (Mork) Brueckner and a grandson of Henry and Ethel (Nash) Mork. He is therefore a great great grandson of the first John Nash. John and Rhoda Nash John Nash was born in England on Oct. 25, 1839 and came to this country in 1858, going to the state of Michigan. It was there that he married Rhoda French of that state. Within a few months the land was surveyed and John found he was not on the land he wanted. In 1882 he moved to a different quarter of land and took this as his homestead. As he was the first settler in that township, it was named after him. That same year (1882) he brought his wife and five children to be with him and four more children were born. John Nash, Sr. died Jan. 30, 1907 and his wife died Feb. 23, 1915. homesteaded in Nash Township in 1895. Ole married Katherine Lybeck in December 1890 at her home near McVille. She was born in Helgeland, Norway in 1861 and came to North Dakota in 1877. She died in 1946 at Petersburg and Ole Nash died at his farm home in 1912. They had seven children: Carl, Clarence Arthur, Peter Isak, May Charlotte, Anna Christine, Edith Florence, and Alvin Oscar. Alvin Nash of Petersburg and Eva Matickka of Whitefish, Mont, were married at the Faith Methodist Church in Williston, Nov. 12, 1977. They bought a home in Williston where they are now living. Reuben and Rhoda Nash Reuben and Rhoda Nash came to Nash Township in 1932 from Newfolden, Minn. They farmed what was then known as the Ole Gunderson farm until 1940 when they purchased and moved to their present farm. Two children were born to this family: Delores (Mrs. Kenneth Skjervem) of California, they have three children, and Ronald, married Charlotte Forester of Fordville. They have three sons and live at Hillsboro, N.D. where Ronald is employed by the Crystal Sugar plant there. Reuben passed away in 1972 and his wife, Rhoda, lives at Warren, Minn. Willie and Marie Nash Willie Centennial Nash was born Oct. 4, 1876 near Faribault, Minn, to Rhoda and John Nash. He came to the Petersburg area when his parents and family moved there in 1882. When they first came here they had to go to Larimore for groceries and supplies, that being the closest and the trip took two days. Willie homesteaded on the quarter of land across the road from his father's homestead. After his father's death Willie farmed both his father's land and his own for several years until he bought the land from his father's estate. He continued to farm until the time of his death. On Dec. 31, 1906 Willie Nash married Marie Anderson; six children were born to them. Ethel (Mrs. Henry Mork) Petersburg; John W. Nash, Lakota; Emma (Mrs. Edward Wurgler) York, N.D.; Earl Nash (Good Samaritan Home), Lakota; Rose (Mrs. Ralph Garland), Rock Island, Texas; and Minnie (Mrs. Charles Wurgler), York, N.D. John Nash, the grandson of John Nash, Sr. started farming after his father's death and continued farming until April 24, 1974 when he had an auction and sold all his farm machinery. He rented out the land and continued living in the house until the spring of 1980, when he bought a house in Lakota and moved there to live. Mrs. Willie Nash passed away March 7, 1950. When John moved to Lakota he rented the farm to Ardell Bruechner, a great, great grandson to John Nash, Sr. Ardell is married to Nancy Welte, who also teaches school at Midway. They have one daughter. The Ardell Bruechners have since purchased the Willie Nash estate and are the fifth generation to farm the land. Ole and Katherine Nash Ole C. Nash and his twin brother Sever C. Nash were born in 1859 in Sogn, Luster Co. Norway. Ole came to America in 1880 and to Nelson County soon thereafter and Bernard Naughter Bernard Naughter was born in Ireland. He homesteaded in Nash Township where he lived for many years.
