Description
Summary:ker" or Song Leader of the congregation from 1912 to 1919. He served as secretary of the congregation from 1914 to 1921 and also served on various committees and as delegate to church conventions. He was active in school affairs and served on the School Board. During World War I he served as Food Administrator for Dahlen Township. In 1927 Carl, Amelia and family left for Miles City, Mont. They lived there until in 1928 when they went to Dawson Creek, British Columbia in the Peace River Country, Canada where they settled down and made their home. They were parents of ten children: Myrtle (Mrs. Arnold Neste), Edward (deceased), Albert, Edna (Mrs. Clayton Moen), Ronald, Carolyn (Mrs. Raymond Torgrimson), Arnold, Eleanore (Mrs. Mel Alexander), Helen (Mrs. Russell Gilbertson) and Ardella (Mrs. Murray Harper). Carl died in 1953 and Amelia died in 1974. They are both buried in a cemetery in British Columbia, Canada. Carl and Amelia Dahlen (Moen) Midtmoen. They attended the rural school north of Dahlen. Molly also attended school in Fordville while her family lived there. Elling played trombone while in high school. At that time the Dahlen Band was under the direction of Mr. Herman Larsgaard. Elling and Amalia (commonly called Molly) were married on Nov. 8, 1927 at the Middle Forrest River Parsonage by the late Rev. H.C. Olsen. They had two children: Clarine Arlis and Duane Arlan. Clarine married Glenn Lian June 3, 1951 and they have two children: Dale and DeAnn. Dale married Paulette Herdegen in 1976 and their two little boys are Travis and Troy. They reside in Fargo. DeAnn lives in Grand Forks. Duane Arlan was born Feb. 14, 1937. He was born with a heart defect and passed away the following year, Feb. 25, 1938. After their marriage, Elling and Molly purchased and farmed the original homestead of Elling's grandparents, the Elling N. Dahlens, first Dahlen Township settlers. Beginning farming then, the equipment included four horses, three cows, pigs and chickens. After a few years, the first tractor purchased was a Fordson. One of the hardships of farming was the grasshopper plague of the 30's. Trying to control the grasshoppers, Molly drove the horses on a flat-boxed wagon and Elling sat in the back of the box spreading arsenic along the field edge trying to control the hoppers. As a method of repaying the government for feed for the cattle, Elling along with other men of the community were involved in various Township gravel projects. This meant driving with horses and wagon out to the gravel pit near the Jens Quam farm in bitterly cold weather. In the early 40's the first combine was used, a six foot Case Model. This was primarily used for the lodged grain which was difficult to make neat bundles out of with a binder. Another benefit was the advent of electricity by the RE A in 1941. Elling and Molly have been active members of and love their church, the Dahlen Lutheran Church. Elling served as custodian of the church for several years and Molly was one of the first officers of the LCW when the Middle Forest and Zion Churches merged in 1935. Elling and Molly are now retired and live in Dahlen. Elling and Molly Dahlen, Golden Wedding Anniversary Nov. 8, 1977 Elling and Amalia Dahlen Elling J. Dahlen, second eldest son of Andrew E. and Clara (Espelien) Dahlen was born Sept. 23, 1906 at his parent's farm. Amalia 0. Midtmoen, a neighbor girl who later became his bride, was born Dec. 24, 1905 to Ole Olsen and Anna Elling N. and Marit Dahlen Elling Nilson Dahlen was born at Skrautval, Valdres, Norway, Oct. 28, 1835, son of Nils and Anne (Holdal) Dahlen. He married Marit Lyseng, born April 14, 1835, daughter of Engebret and Marit Lyseng. In 1865, they emigrated to Goodhue County, Minn, with three sons, Nels, Ingebret and Knut, leaving Bergen in a sailing ship that took 14 weeks for the voyage to America. In 1872 they moved to Montevideo, Chippewa County, Minn. In 1881, Elling, Marit and family came to Dakota Territory, to what is now Dahlen Township, where Elling and two sons homesteaded, traveling by covered wagons and oxen, driving the cattle and sheep. Many difficulties were encountered on this 300 mile trip as there were neither roads nor bridges and the oxen, sheep and cattle had to swim streams. The Indians were friendly. The first winter they lived in a hillside dugout, the following summer a log house was built. In 1882, a meeting was called by Elling to organize a congregation and then services were held at his home for a year until the church was built. Marit became the first president of the Ladies' Aid. Elling and Marit became leaders in the community rendering much help to new settlers who were arriving. The first postoffice, called Belleville, was located in their home and Elling was the 170 Scanned with a Zeutschel Zeta book scanner at 300 dpi. Edited in Multi-page TIFF Editor.
