Description
Summary:had some prodding from his daughter; I did have a way of getting around him. We were tragically saddened by the death of our oldest brother, Loren, at the age of 16, on September 6, 1936. He was a quiet, personable youth; loved and admired by all. He had everything to carry him on to success- intelligence, wit, good looks, and an enviable physique but that wasn't in the cards. In the spring he had refused to miss school to be innoculated for diphtheria; and it was diphtheria he contracted during that threshing season. The following threshing season tragedy struck again. My father either fainted or had a sun stroke, causing him to fall from atop his grain separator. After four days of paralysis, due to a broken neck, he died August 28, 1937. That fall my mother moved her remaining brood, with the help of Hans Frosaker, our faithful and dear hired hand, to Sheyenne where we three girls graduated from high school. In the spring of 1938, it was discovered that Delilah had diabetes. She spent many weeks in the New Rockford Hospital. Though against the rules, the nurses would give her rides on the dumb waiter to while away lonely hours. Later, while attempting to find work in Sioux City, la., Delilah lapsed into a coma and died July 7,1948. Ella Stoeber Zempel died of pneumonia in Spokane, Wash, on February 26, 1959. I married Lon Marsh, a rancher and race horse owner in Billings, Mont. This short marriage ended in divorce after which I attended Billings Business College. I then went to Seattle and worked two years for the Abbott Laboratories, a pharmaceutical concern. Later in New York City, I met and married William Mates. We had four children: Bradford, now in Phoenix, Ariz.; Loren, Federal Way, Wash. Both Loren and Nancy, his wife of one year, attend college. Shelly is in Spokane, Wash, and Robin, a fourth year college student at Central Washington State College in Ellensburg is taking up broadcasting. In 1960 Bill didn't survive open heart surgery performed at Sacred Heart Hospital in Spokane. He was the 12th patient on the then new heart and lung machine. I am now married to Al Kendrich, who is an operating engineer on the Alaska Pipeline project. At present he is at Galbraith Lake Camp, just above the Arctic Circle. We have a daughter, Taryn, age 13, who attends Toppenish Junior High School. She has one dog, two roosters and dreams of owning a horse. So with Al away, Taryn (Tup) and I hold down the fort, a mobile home on the Yakima Indian Reservation, one mile out of Toppenish, Wash.
