MILNE FAMILY By Grace Milne Harris It is today my parents' 77th wedding anniversary as I sit down to write. They were married at the home of my Grandmother Clark on the farm in Rockford Township. I have their marriage certificate dated February 18, 1903, signed by W.C. Beardsley, Judge of the County Court; E.P. Johnson, Minister of Rolla; and two witnesses, Howard Milne and Sadie Clark. The newspaper report is in The Sheyenne Star, February 19, 1903. There is a copy in your Sheyenne museum, also in the Transcript nearest that date. But to back up a bit, Wm. Milne, born June 24, 1838, married Eliza Millen, born February 7, 1842. They were married February 27, 1862 at Fordwich, Ontario. Their graves are in Riverside Cemetery, Sheyenne, where my parents are, too. In March, 1882, they came up the Red River from Manitoba, Canada, locating at Mekinock, Grand Forks County, then Dakota territory. In 1883, the urge to move on west took them to Eddy County. Joe Bush, a bachelor, I believe, never stayed long enough in what is now Bush Township to claim the land. My Granddad Milne contested his claim. So with his pre-emption claim east of Sheyenne, and that of Joe Bush, they became owners of what was the Milne land, nine miles east of Sheyenne. The Clark family went west from Henderson, Minn. My Mother, Mary Ellen (Mamie) was the oldest of eleven Clark children. She, with her Mother and some of the older children, went by train to New Rockford. My Grandfather, George Washington Clark, had gone before them and had a sod shanty prepared. Their graves are in the Catholic cemetery, New Rockford. His brother, Frank Clark and his wife are in the same lot with my parents in Riverside Cemetery. 1918 8th grade graduation. Back: Leila Stewart, Millard Brolin, Floyd Hall, Charles Brolin. Front: Wallace Milne, Grace Milne, Edward Brolin. The Millen family settled farther down the Sheyenne River, not very farm from Early Settlers picnic grounds. George, Grandmother's nephew, married Olga Olson of Oberon. They lived in Sheyenne the last years of their lives. George Millen and Louie Soderstrom built many roads in Eddy County. Sheyenne will always remember Olga as a nurse on whom people could depend. Hugh Milne stayed in Grand Forks area farming for many years. He moved to our Bush Township farm, later to Sheyenne, where he cared for Grandma and Grandpa Milne their last years. They moved to town in 1917. Dad's oldest brother stayed in Manitoba all his life. Howard Milne was a first cousin whose parents died early in his life. My grandparents adopted him. He died in Eugene, Ore. in 1975, at age 93. Dad had one sister, Mrs. Ed Nash. The Stedman family in Sheyenne are related to the Nashes. Ethel Nash Burd of Halstad, Minn, is the only one of their family left. The Nashes' graves are in Riverside Cemetery. Now for a closer look at Bill and Mamie's family. William Wallace arrived January 10, 1904. My parents teased Charlie and Martha Brolin, "We have a son and you have none." The tables were turned June 24, 1905, when twins, Charles and Millard, were born. Wallace finished high school in Maddock. He taught in Hillsdale and other schools until he entered Indian Service. He married Lydia Syvertson of Hamar in July, 1936. His degree was from Valley City Teachers College. They now live in Lakewood, Calif. Their son, Bob, is airport manager at Joplin, Mo. He and his wife, Judy, have a son and daughter. Bill Milne IV also has a wife, Judy. They have five children. Bill Milne V was born in August, 1979. His dad is employed by Graco Co. of Minneapolis. My brother, George, was born April 3, 1908 and finished Sheyenne High School. He worked in Faskrud's Store a while before going to business school in Fargo. After that he worked in Fessenden and Deering. Later he worked in Sturgis, S. Dak., St. Cloud, Minn, and La Crosse, Wise His life work was in banking. He married Ernestine Heacox of Deering in 1934. Their son, David, is married. He is an architect in Salt Lake City. Son, John, teaches law at the University of Washington, Seattle. Their daughter, Mary, is a graduate student at La Crosse College. George and Teen are retired in Venice, Fla. but go to La Crosse for the summer months. My brother, Earl, also finished high school in Sheyenne. 208 Scanned with a Zeutschel Zeta book scanner at 300 dpi. Edited with Multi-Page TIFF Editor.
