From a rural area named Merasjarvi in northern Sweden, Hilda Vaara came to the United States and later, through marriage, found her family name changed to Mattson, also. John worked near Ely, Minnesota in an underground iron mine. Hilda worked in boarding houses in Superior, Wisconsin and northern Minnesota. Somewhere along the way, the quiet-spoken John and the more talkative Hilda met and were married on July 3,1896. A son, Robert, was born to them in Ely. In 1898 John and his family moved to North Dakota near Rolla. From the land came sod for sod houses in which John and Hilda lived with their growing family for some years. Later they lived in a small log house. Still later they had a large frame house built by the Pikkarainen brothers during the years of 1911 and 1912. The chief carpenter was Nestor Pikkarainen. A large barn was built in 1918. This was later lowered, but in the 1970s tornado winds caused it to collapse, with Edwin Mattson escaping from underneath just in time. In addition to Robert (Rolla), the following children were born: Lulu (Virginia, Minnesota; married to John Koski), Edward (Rolla, married to Madge Berg), Eino (Rolla, married to Hilda Hoyhtya), Evert (Rolla, married to Mayme Hendrickson), Eli (Rolla and Virginia, Minnesota; married to Caroline Kjellerson), Ida Emelia (died Scanned with a Zeutschel Zeta book scanner at 300 dpi.
