Description
Summary:Assembly Of God In response to requests from residents of this area, Rev. R. V. Haas came to be pastor of the Northwood church. Rev. Haas was at that time serving as the Assembly of God pastor in Finley, North Dakota. In the fall of 1949 tent meetings with Evangelist Hall were begun. These meetings were held at the present site of the church. Soon after this a downtown building was purchased to serve temporarily as a meeting place. Procedure in regard to building was begun in 1951 and then delayed until 1953. Rev. David Smith, now of East Grand Forks, MN, assisted Rev. Haas at this time. In the fall of 1953 Rev. Haas left Northwood to take up duties at Sparta, Wis. Rev. and Mrs. C. O. Osland were elected to fill the vacancy. Shortly thereafter, the building uptown, now Northwood Plumbing and Heating Company, was sold and work was begun on the basement structure. In 1953 Rev. C. J. Larson, Sectional Presbyter, then serving the church at Grand Forks, set the church in order and it became officially recognized as a district dependent Assembly of God Church, thus joining the ranks of the nearly 10,000 Assembly of God churches nationwide. Work on the upper sanctuary was begun and services therein were held in February, 1974. Through the years the congregation has given partial support to several missionaries, including Mrs. Osland's sister and husband, the Orville Carlsons, now serving in the Fiji Islands. The local church is affiliated with the North Dakota District Council as well as the National General Council of the Assemblies of God with headquarters at Springfield, Missouri. As we reflect upon past progress in this area both materially and spiritually, we are aware that all progress is not relegated to history. As dedication is made to future progress along these lines, it is with great anticipation the local church dedicates itself to spiritual progress. Beaver Creek Evangelical Lutheran Church Beaver Creek Evangelical Lutheran Church The very first Lutheran pastor that visited this settlement was D. C. Granvold, but he was not able to get anything started. The first Lutheran pastor to begin work here was C. J. M. Gronlid, who was at the time pastor in Hatton. He began preaching in the homes and later in the schoolhouses. Pastor Gronlid organized Beaver Creek congregation in 1886, with about thirty-five members, counting the children. The following officers were elected: President, Rev. Gronlid; Secretary, Ole Coltom; Treasurer, Knut Heskin; Trustees: Knut Heskin, Peter E. Bjerke, and Knut Johnson; Mr. M. Ullensaker was elected "klokker" or Precentor. The Ladies Aid was organized January 26, 1887, with Mrs. Pete Coltom as the first president, Mrs. M. Ullensaker, secretary, and Mrs. Johanne Heskin, treasurer. Mr. Knut Brunsdale gave two acres of land for the church and cemetery, and on this place the Beaver Creek Church was built in 1898 at a cost of $3,625. In 1909 Beaver Creek united with West Union and Bethania. In 1914 these congregations bought the parsonage in Northwood, completely renovating it in 1949. After the church was remodeled in 1957, the old chapel was replaced with a new addition in 1958. The following pastors have served the congregation: C.J. M. Gronlid, 1886-1894; B. Tollefson, 1894-1898; L. S. Marvick, 1898-1903; P. A. Thoreson, 1899- 1903; V. E. Boe, 1903-1909; T. Tjornhom, 1909-1913; S. H. Njaa, 1913-1949; V. C. A. Ovrebo, 1949-1953; A. G.
