Summary:Commercial Hotel on First St. Broadway Commercial*Travelers lnn*Palm Hotel April 23, 1883 the United States deeded to Edwin A. Lamb lots 23-24-25-26-27 in Block 17 reserving a strip of land 100' wide north of the St. Paul, Minneapolis and Manitoba Railway. In May it was deeded to Day K. Smith, Russel Stimson and Walter H. Griffin. Joseph Hay and his wife Alice bought it in October 1 883 after several quit claim sales. Dubroys had ownership in May 1892. He was proprietor of the Commercial Hotel, the first hotel on that lot. Jack Hayes built the hotel. Dubroys left for Cleveland O. in 1895. They had deeded the hotel to James J. Lamb in 1894. Frank Hobson became the next proprietor, he also had the livery and feed just west of the hotel. They lived on the premises for a couple of years, then moved to their farm south of town. They moved to the state of Michigan in 1903. Alfred Floren bought the farm, it is now owned by Franzens and Harold Smaages the occupants. J.B. McFall rented the hotel and was the proprietor of Commercial and Livery in 1897. James J. Lamb sold it to Terrett in June 1902, in July the Michigan City Bank and Michigan City Loan & Realty became owners with Terretts by quit claim deed. They built the Terrett Hotel, it was opened for business in 1903. The architect was Hunter of Grand Forks and C. Gifford a well known hotel man from Grand Forks, leased the premises. It had 25 rooms and was surrounded by a cement sidewalk. In December Mr. Gifford moved to Portal ND. The Michigan City Bank moved its offices to the hotel in July 1903. In 1904 F.D. Heffron had his barber shop there. The fall of 191 2 Terretts left for the west coast. Ben Churchill rented it, changing the name to Travelers Inn. Mrs. E.L. Tiffany was the cook. They also had the livery. Travelers Inn Ben Churchill Prop. 1913 Note lamp post Palm Hotel Taken after 1915 Post in center street says, "Keep To The Right." Palm The Michigan City Loan and Realty Company a corporation sold to Dora and Ludwig Klinge in October 1913. Charles Garrison of Rock Lake, ND opened the Palm Hotel in April 1915. He had taken over Travelers Inn. leasing from Klings. December 1919 Klings sold to Ernest McHaffies. He had charge of it for just a few years. He leased it to L.F. Mason of Larimore. October 1922 W.E. Smeltzer had it for one year, then to E.C. Sipes. Warren Knowles also had it a short time. October 1928 A. Older closed the Palm, had an auction and moved west. It was leased to Fred Cady of Grandin in November 1928. It was eventually deeded to Lambs Bank in November 1936, who had moved into the former Michigan City Bank in December 1930, having closed the month before. Many business occupied the Palm over the years. Dr. Wagar had his office behind the bank. Several had beauty shops there. The last one being Nellie Biesiot. A mortuary once occupied the basement. Helyn Cady had her beauty shop in the basement. There were the barber shops of Jack Bardenhagen, Heffrons and H.M. Heier. The Palms dining room was located in the northeast corner where some of the best meals in town were served. Thanksgiving turkey and all the trimmings and pumpkin pie for 50 cents. It was also rated as very clean by the inspectors. In the 30's the top floor was used for apartments, as well as the dining room and south east corner of the basement. The Michigan Improvement Association (Imp) took over this spot in 1947. Milo Elgin got the property in 1970. He had it torn down by Strong Excavating of Devils Lake, ND and still owns the property which is used for a car lot.
