In the entire history of our school, only two of its students have received this high honor. Requirements necessary for this award include having the State Farmer Degree, being an FFA member for 36 consecutive months, the completion of three years of Vo Ag, a Gary Hintz and wife Jean. satisfactory record of participation in local and state association, out of school one year, have a satisfactory scholastic average and show outstanding leadership. The recipient must also have an outstanding SOEP (Supervised Occupational Experience Program) in operation and must have earned at least $1,000 from SOEP. Gerhardt (Gary) Hintz was the first student to be awarded the American Farmer Degree from Elgin High School. He graduated in 1944 and received the degree in October of 1945. Upon graduation he served in the military and then was a civil service employee where he traveled a great deal including almost all the states in the union and Alaska and Greenland. He retired in 1982. He and his wife have four children, 12 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. They are making their home in Oklahoma. . atSfiaHMBOH' * I I I 1 i 1 \ I FUTURE FARMERS OF AMERICA NATIONAL FFA CONVENTION In the 59 year history of our school the only other recipient is Shawn Vilhauer.
