ELNER MONSON FAMILY Elner, LuVerne, and Jimmy Monson came to Belcourt in August of 1966. Elner began teaching a class of eighth grade that school year and continued teaching for the next three years; later he was assigned as elementary school counselor and was also a principal-teacher at the Houle School northeast of Belcourt. In 1970 he was assigned to the Turtle Mountain Elementary School as assistant principal and in 1972 became the principal. LuVerne has taught in Belcourt first as a classroom teacher and, now is a teacher of Basic Skills in the primary grades. Robert born October 18, 1966 and Judy born December 2, 1967 are students of the high school and James born May 14, 1965 is a student at NDSU. During the school year 1983-84 the Monson family hosted an American Field Service (AFS) student, Kjersti Morset, from Stjordal, Norway, here in Belcourt. Elner's parents were Martin (1883-1940) and Mina (1884-1980) (Offerdahl) Monson who were both born and lived all their lives on a farm near Hatton, in Grand Forks County. LuVerne's dad Henry Wastvedt (1885-1966) was also born and raised at Hatton. He was a manager of a cooperative oil station for 35 years and also farmed. LuVerne's mother, Anna Olson (born 1902) was born and raised on a farm near Roseau, Minnesota. Luvern has three sisters and one brother, and Elner has three brothers. LOUISE MONTOUR Louise Montour is a daughter of Albert Montour and Pauline Laverdure. Her grandparents are Pascal Montour and Judith Dumont. Judith was a sister of Gabriel Dumont, famous leader of the second Riel Rebellion of the Metis in Canada in 1885. Albert also had a brother, Pascal Montour, who lived in Belcourt. He married Ernestine Gourneau. Both are deceased. Louise's mother Pauline was a daughter of Pierre Laverdure and Agnes Perronteau. Pauline's HI Louise Montour, 1984. Pauline Montour (1889 to Nov. 22, 1965). brothers and sisters were Stanislaus, Isadore, Cecelia (Mrs. Jacques Belgarde), Adele (first married to Alexander Davis and then Joe R. Allard), Isabel (Mrs. Patrick Morin) and Margaret (Mrs. John B. Davis. Louise's father Albert Montour died in 1915 when Louise was one year old. Louise had a brother Simon who died as a child. Louise who worked at William Langer Jewel Bearing Plant in Rolla from its beginning in 1953 retired in 1980. Louise and her mother lived together in their home in Belcourt across from the shopping mall until Pauline's death November 22, 1965. In 1979 Louise moved into the Belcourt Retirement Home where she is now living.
