Albert, son of Frank and Margaret (Schwartz) Freitag, was born May 30, 1904. He grew up on his parents' farm about five miles northwest of Glen Ullin and attended the Eagles Nest school about two miles away from home. Anna, daughter of Jacob and Margaret (Schlatter) Waleri, was born Feb. 27, 1907. The Waleri family lived on their homestead about 11 miles north of Hebron. School was about two miles away and the children usually walked. In winter they sometimes used a horse and sled and Anna remembers a time they had a runaway. Albert and Anna were married in St. Ann's church in Hebron on Nov. 9, 1927. A short time after their marriage, Anna's father died. To help her mother, they lived with the Waleri family for a time. In 1929 they moved to a farm seven miles northeast of Glen Ullin which they purchased from Jake Erwert. At that time they drove a 1912 Model T Ford. They had few belongings to move; the cattle were moved across the hills by horseback. On the farm there was a 3-room house made of rough board with mud bricks in between the walls. Inside it was wallpapered, but still it was very cold in the winter. The years were depression years and it was dry, with no crops and no garden. In the middle 1930's Albert worked on W.P.A. for two winters to earn extra money. Albert and Anna retired to live in Glen Ullin in 1968. The children are: Norbert, born 1929, married Peggy Klinkham- mer and lives in Grand Forks where he works on construction. Lauretta, born 1932, married Konston Schumacher and they live in Glen Ullin; Konston works for the B.N. Railroad and Lauretta works at Marian Manor. Alberta, born in 1936, married Robert Schutt and they live on a farm near Beulah. Patricia, born in 1939, married Robert Ranck and they live in Englewood, CO, where he is employed in TV repair. A son, Peter John, died at birth in 1942. Albert and Anna have 14 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Joseph E. Fridgen The Fridgen family came to Glen Ullin in the fall of 1912, when Mr. Fridgen became manager of the Occident Elevator there. The family then consisted of Joseph, Johanna and their three children- Johanna, Cecilia and Sylvester. Two more daughters, Eleanor and Ethel, were born in Glen Ullin. Mr. and Mrs. Fridgen were active members of Sacred Heart church and the children attended the parochial school through the Joseph & Johanna Fridgen eighth grade. All except Ethel graduated from Glen Ullin High School, she finished high school in Fargo. Mr. Fridgen was active in affairs of the city, served as an alderman for some years and also served on election boards. Joseph Fridgen was born in Millerville, MN, and grew up on his parents' farm near there. Mrs. Fridgen (Johanna Grohs) was born in Germany and immigrated to the U.S. in 1900. She came to Dumont, MN, where her brother Peter had settled after coming from Germany a few years earlier. Joseph Fridgen and Johanna Grohs were married in Dumont on June 16, 1903, and lived there for a short time. From there they moved to Bird Island, MN; Pingree, ND; West Union, MN; and Glen Ullin, ND. Joe was a grain buyer at these different locations. After more than 30 years at Glen Ullin and the family all raised and away from home, the Fridgens moved to Fargo, ND, to be nearer their family. They enjoyed living in Fargo but kept in touch with their Glen Ullin friends for many years. Mr. Fridgen died Feb. 4, 1966, and Mrs. Fridgen on Feb. 2, 1968. Johanna (Mrs. J.J. Kavanaugh) has three sons and lives in Fargo. Her husband, Joe, died in 1969. Cecelia (Mrs. R.W. Borgerson) has two daughters and a son and lives in Minneapolis, MN, and Los Angeles, CA.
