Description
Summary:Gail Hudson, driver of dray wagon, taking a load of rabbit pelts to the railroad for shipment. Hunting Glen Ullin's first great hunter was George White who, in one season, killed 85 deer and kept the town well supplied with meat. Jim McNeil killed the first lynx in the area. Hunting in the Glen Ullin area was considered good in the early years. As many as 500 antelope were seen in one bunch in the 1880's and 90's. Sage hens or prairie chickens were plentiful up until the late 30's. Pheasants were planted here about 1920. Jackrabbit roundups were held in the 1920's when they became over-populated. As many as two double-box wagonloads were taken at each roundup. Only shotguns were used. The roundup would cover an area of approximately nine to 12 square miles. Fishing in the early years was not as it is today. Catfish, bullheads and suckers were all that was to be caught. Rabbit hunt Earl Milas Courtesy of Glen Ullin Times Marvin Opp developed an interest in hunting as a young lad in the Glen Ullin area. In the fall of 1965 Marvin took his first hunting trip to Cody, WY. This elk hunt, which was a success, started him with his hunting hobby. 1967 was the year Marvin took his first trip into Ontario, Canada. While there he shot a moose, but used only the meat of the animal. In 1969 he went to Watson Lake, Yukon, for a moose, caribou and Dall sheep, which he decided to have mounted. He has gone hunting in the Canadian area ever since. In 1974 Marvin went to British Columbia, Canada, for an elk, mountain goat and a Stone sheep; in 1975 he traveled to Alberta, Canada, for a Big Horn sheep. Since 1969 he has hunted wolves in British Columbia; elk, goat, sheep and bear in Canada; cougar and bear in Rifle, CO; Russian boar in Paso Robles, CA, to add to his trophies. In March 1980 Marvin and his wife, Carol, went to Belize, Central America, for a jaguar, red lion and occelot, and in December 1980 he got the Desert sheep in Boja, Mexico, which completed his grand slam. (A grand slam is the four different sheep found in the American continent.) Only the heads of these four sheep are mounted. Marvin will soon complete his second grand slam and these sheep are to be full mounted trophies. On Sept. 7, 1982, Marvin left for Mongolia to hunt the Ibex and Altai Argali sheep, and soon he hopes to hunt in other countries, especially Africa.
