Summary:locating in LaCrosse, Wisconsin, where for four years he was employed in the lumber industry. He then joined his brother Peder in farming at Woonsocket, S. Dak. However, the pioneer spirit led the brothers to seek a new home in Tennessee, from which, after two years, they returned to their S. Dak. home. In 1902 he came to York in a covered wagon. The 350 mile trip required 14 days due to lack of roads. He homesteaded in Broe Township near Baker. On October 28,1908 John Solberg married Mathea Lunde of LaCrosse, Wisconsin. She was born in Gudbransdalen, Norway, December 9, 1884 and came to LaCrosse in 1905. After John and Mathea were married they came to Broe Township and settled on John's homestead. To this union three children were born: Einar of Baker area, Alvin of Leeds and Myrtle, who perished in 1963 in a plane crash in the Pacific Ocean while en route from a visit with home folks to Alaska where she was employed at the Elmendorf AFB at Anchorage. Mr. and Mrs. Solberg were active members of St. Petri Lutheran Church. They lived on the home farm until 1952 when they retired and moved to Leeds where Mrs. Solberg still lives with her son Alvin. Mr. Solberg passed away in 1955. Einar and his wife are living on the original John Solberg farm. Alvin Solberg served in the armed forces during World War II. MELVIN J. SOLBERG FAMILY Melvin J. Solberg, son of Christen and Rakkel Solberg, was born February 3, 1901 on the family farm northeast of Baker. He attended school and grew to manhood in this area. On June 28, 1936 he was married to B. Veda Engen at Northwood. To them were born two sons, namely Mark and Greg. Melvin worked in the Peavey Elevator in Baker for a number of years. In 1944, Mr. and Mrs. Solberg left Baker for Fargo. Two years later they moved to LaMoure where he continued as a Grain Elevator Manager. In 1954, they moved to Bottineau and managed the Farmers Elevator there until retiring in 1968. They still reside in Bottineau. OLAF SOLBERG FAMILY Olaf Solberg was born on the Christ Solberg farm in Broe Township, northeast of Baker September 28, 1914. He attended school in Baker, graduating from high school in 1932. After completing high school he farmed with his parents until 1945 when he purchased the home farm. On August 4, 1962 Olaf Solberg married Shirley Burke of Leeds at Fargo. Shirley, daughter of Henry and Otelia Carlson Burke, was born May 8, 1936 in Pierce County near Tunbridge. She moved with her parents to Leeds in the spring of 1940. She attended school at Leeds, graduating from high school in 1954. She attended Minot State College a couple of years. As a young woman she was an 277 Scanned with a Zeutschel Zeta book scanner at 300 dpi. Edited with Multi-Page TIFF Editor.
