Description
Summary:LUD AND CLARA LEWIS Ludwig was born at Grove City, Minn., and at the age of 16 his father and mother moved to Dawson, where his folks started a creamery. Lud worked at the creamery and then went to college at Ellendale, N.D., taking up a business course. Later he worked at Vick Smith's grocery store. He had four brothers and two sisters: Edward, Harry, Ernest, Bill, George, Esther and Abbie. I, Clara came to Dawson from Grey Eagle, Minn. I was born at Albany, Minn. I met Lud where he worked when I started work for Vick Smith, also. Later on, I worked for Mrs. Eastburn at the Sibley Hotel in Dawson as a waitress. Lud and I were married at Ward Springs, Minn. We then lived at Sidney, N.D. where Lud and Ed Bon had a grocery store. He then sold the store and we moved back to Dawson. Lud started a garage, repairing and selling cars. We built a home at Dawson, but in 1940 the tornado took our home and everything we had, but we rebuilt again in Dawson. We had three children: Mildred, Donald and Harold. They all finished school at Dawson and went to college. Clara and Lud Mildred attended the J amestown School of Business after graduation. She worked at the Kidder County court house for the Welfare Office and the Farm Security Adm. She has had 30 years of government service. She married Charles Johnston, also from Dawson. They lived at Oakland for a long time and then moved to Reno, Nevada where Charles had a motel, which he sold upon retirement. Donald married Kathryn Heimes of Valley City. They lived in the east for a while and then moved to California. Donald and Kay have two children: Greg, who is married and lives near Valley City on a farm in the summer and they take a vacation in the winter; and Liana, married and lives at Kodiak, Alaska. Donald works for Northrop Corp. and Kathryn works at school with the teachers. Their home is at Palos Verdes, Calif. Harold is married to Eleanor Borg of Valley City. They live at Valley City, where Harold is County Supt. of Schools for Barnes County. They have two children: David and Suzanne. David is married and lives at Rapid City, SD. and their children are named Ginger and John. Suzanne is married to Rod Larson and they live at Fergus Falls, Minn. Lud, Harold, Donald and Mildred Lud was sick a long time and he passed away in 1952 on Sept. 19. We had a busy life in Dawson while Lud was well. He kept busy in church work and on the school board and the town board. Dawson was home to us and all our good friends lived there. Dawson was a wonderful little town. People always were good and kind, helping each other in time of need. The town is getting smaller but is still a good place to live. Two years after Lud passed away, I moved to Bismarck and went to work, a long time for Mrs. John Fleck. After retirement I now visit my children every winter and I live at Senior Crescent Manor. ARNOLD AND LILLIAN LUEDTKE Arnold and Lillian Luedtke have lived in two communities in Kidder County. Crystal Springs from 1926 to 1931, and at Dawson from 1941 until his death on April 21, 1952.
