The Ayr girls won their second consecutive North Dakota Consolidated High School League state championship, climaxing a two year record of 43 straight victories. The tournamentwas held inthe Buffalogymnasium, Buffalo, North Dakota. Team members were Mildred Moen, Lucille Moen, Doris Boyd, Doris Lentz, Isabel Stabe, Josephine Rueckert, Berniece "Toots" Moen, Betty Lentz, Betty Taylor, and Adeline Mourn. Jack Lynch was the coach. The team won 19 games. The state tournament scores were: Ayr36'-Gilby6 Ayr 47 - Greenland 42 Ayr 43 - Cleveland 27 - Championship All-State First Team selections were Doris Lentz and Doris Boyd. All-State Second Team selections were Lucille Moen and Isabele Stabe. Ayr had a tough game with Greenland but came out on top. Cleveland was away to an early lead, but the markmanship of its forward trio of Lucille Moen, Mildred Moen, and Doris Boyd out- maneuvered Cleveland's defense to overtake the Stutsman County Clan by the surest method, point production, and a good defensive job done by Doris Lentz, Josephine Rueckert, and Isabel Stabe. Berniece Moen entered the game in the final quarter and sank three field goals. The boys team won 20 straight before losing to Munich in the final of the state tournament. Ayr High School had an enrollment of 26 students. The 1 939-40 season was again a success. The Ayr Girls Basketball Team won their third consecutive North Dakota Consolidated High School League girls basketball championship. The tournament was played at the Buffalo High School gymnasium. The team members were Lucille Moen, Mildred Moen, Doris Boyd, Doris Lentz, Berniece Moen, Betty Taylor, Alyce Esdaile, La- Vonne Moug, Adeline Mourn, and Betty Lentz. Jack Lynch was the coach. The state tournament scores were: Ayr 63- Russell 8 State Champions 1939-40 Betty Taylor, Adeline Mourn, Betty Lentz, LaVonne Moug, Alyce Esdaile, Berniece Moen, Doris Boyd, Mildred Moen, Doris Lentz, Lucille Moen. Ayr 30- Foxholm 20 Ayr 1 8 - Amenia 1 2 - Championship All-State First Team selections were Lucille Moen, Doris Boyd, and Doris Lentz, All-State Second Team selection was Mildred Moen. The team had a tough game with Amenia, but Lucille Moen and Doris Boyd each rang up a field goal in the final quarter to keep ahead of Amenia. Strong defensive play was largely responsible for the low scores. Doris Lentz and Mildred Moen turned in good guard performances for Ayr.Three years during a string of 63 straight games, Ayr has scored 2,420 points to 824 for its opponents-an average of 40 against 1 3. The Ayr Girls Basketball team captured the North Dakota Consolidated High School League Girls Basketball Championship for the fourth consecutive year. The tournament was held at the Buffalo gymnasium, Buffalo, North Dakota.
