Summary: | APPAM FARMERS ELEVATOR Farmers Elevator at Appam, N. Dak. On July 29, 1916 the Farmers Co-operative Elevator later named Appam Farmers Elevator Company was organized with Lenard Broe, K. L. Esterby and Hagan Krabseth selling shares. The first clerk was Lenard Broe and K. L. Esterby was chairman. Other members were: Hagan Krabseth, Lud Solberg, G. E. Grandstrom, J. H. Eldsvoog, Lars Larson, Appam Mercantile E. O. Berg, Mrs. Rose Solberg, Andrew Berg, Even J. Dragseth, E. Edwin Dragseth, Hans Johnson, Frank Klipp, J. A. Haarsager, J. M. Greenland, Anton Amundson, aU from Marmon, North Dakota. Louis E. Bestrom, Springbrook; Hans Larson, Martin Johnson, Matt ColweU, John Wagner, John Paulson, Albert Knutson of Zahl. John Berve and John A. Nelson of Cottonwood Lake. Ole P. Holm of Nora. On August 18, 1916 the board met with the Hanstain Brs. Company to build an elevator for $9800.00 in accordance with laws. It was agreed to pay $3500.00 when the material arrived and $3000.00 when the building was enclosed and$3300.00 when the building was completed. In 1917 they agreed to buy an adding machine and pay for it in the fall without interest. The manager was instructed to buy three carloads of oats. A motion was made that hereafter the elevator company sell for cash only, including oats, potatoes, coal and flour. On August 28, 1928 a meetlngwas caUed for the purpose of purchasing the oil station from John Peterson and P. M. Johnson at the price of $4500.00 cash and all stocks on hand at cost price. A motion was made to hire Henry Broe as truck driver as he had had two years experience. On April 11, 1931 Mons Magnuson bid $279.00 to build a vault and the manager was to purchase the door for the vault for the company. Lenard Broe resigned April 23,1932 and a Mr. William Moore was hired until July, 1933 when Jack Sullivan became their new manager. He received $75.00 per month with an added $25.00 for gas usedinhis car while out collecting for the company. First gas truck in Appam. In March 1934, Mr. Price became the driver for the gas truck. He received l£ a gallon on gas and kerosene and 5^ on oil and grease. He also had to furnish his own truck but in May of the same year he decided to take another job so Nels Hendrickson was hired as the new truck driver. Other truck drivers have been: Carl Olson, Harley Price, Ernest Swenson, Melvin Storbakken, Robert Esterby and the present driver is Leroy Ramsfield. On February 11, 1941 the elevator board decided to buy the Winter TrusdeU Durciok Elevator for $2,250.00 and also pay the last years taxes. A 50,000 bushel Agsco Building was purchased June 17, 1954 and as times changed and more room was needed two steel bins were added in 1961 which held a capacity of 30,000 bushels. Other managers that have served since J. D. Sullivan were: Oral Quale, Orville Berve, Gene Jenny, Fred RudoU, and at present, RusseU Coutts. The annual meetings have always been a big event. At first the shareholders would bring picnic baskets and spend the whole day. After the business meeting they would play baU, have games, races, usuaUyatug- of-war between the north and the south.
