John and Maria Dallman Family John and Maria Dallman John and Maria Poed Dallman arrived in the United States from Paris, Bessarabia, a Protestant community in South Russia, in 1905. They first came to the Kulm, ND, area where they had relatives. Mr. Dallman started looking for some homestead land in the fall of 1905 and finally found some land available in Mercer County, about \Vz miles northeast of Zap. They then came to this area and the first winter lived in a small 2-room house together with Mr. and Mrs. Emanuel Graumann. Mr. and Mrs. Mittel- steadt's first child was born and since Mrs. Dallman's first baby had died in infancy just before coming to this country, she started caring for the Mittelsteadt baby. In the spring of 1906 Mr. Dallman built their own little house and the necessary farm buildings on their own homestead. Mr. Dallman told of the time he went north of Hazen to buy his first milk cow on credit from a Mr. Miller. Mr. Dallman offered Mr. Miller a note for the cost of the cow, but Mr. Miller replied, "If your word isn't any good, then your note isn't any good either." Mrs. Dallman also told of the time they shared the egg laid by their first chicken. Within three years Mr. Dallman bought some of the Wiege ranch land and in 1910 they moved to the present Dallman ranch. Prior to Wiege purchasing this land, it was a sheep ranch. Mr. and Mrs. Dallman had three children. They were Hulda (Mrs. David Zuern), who has passed away; Elsie (Mrs. Ted Isaak), who also has passed away; and A.J., who owns and lives on the family ranch. The Dallman's retired in 1943 and moved to Arcadia, CA, to be in a warmer climate and where Mr. Dallman could grow grapes as he had grown up in a family that had vineyards and made wine commercially. Mrs. Dallman passed away in Arcadia in 1949 at the age of 63 and Mr. Dallman in 1964 at the age of 82. They are buried in Monrovia, CA. ^ Harold and Ruth Duckwitz Family Harold was born in Hebron, ND, on September 17, 1930 to Ernest and Lena Duckwitz. He died November 14, 1979.
