The other children are: Viola, Norman, LuVerne, Irma, Bernice, Delmar, Kenneth and Arthur. Mitch grew up in the Maddock area and graduated from the BCATS in 1931. During his youth he became skilled in the techniques of wheat production, from skinning nine broncos on a triple-gang plow to tractors, threshing machines and combines. At the height of the great depression, unable to continue further educational pursuits, he joined the Navy in 1934 where he remained for thirty years. During WWII he was promoted to commissioned rank and retired in 1964 as a lieutenant commander. Among the fondest memories of his youth was going to town on Saturday night in the "family buck- board"pulled by his father's favorite team of dappled grays. For his weekly efforts in the fields at this time, he was usually awarded the magnificent sum of 25c--not much, but adequate at the time. Mitch's father, Chris Hauer, emigrated from Norway in September 1902 with his parents, Peder and Lina Hauer, one sister, Harriet, and four brothers, Thor, Pedro, Finn and Nohr, and they settled in North Viking for a time. Peder Hauer homesteaded the SW'A NE'A Sec. 15 in North Viking. Chris worked as a clerk in the Foss Brothers grocery store from September, 1903 until January, 1905 and gained a lot of first hand knowledge of the founding history of the area. In 1907, Chris purchased an 80-acre relinquishment, NEV4 NEV4 Sec. 15, and NWV4 NW/4 Sec. 14. And, this was the last homestead to be recorded in North Viking Township. Mitch's mother, Addie Leona Tongue, came to South Viking from Wisconsin in 1905, with her parents, Herb Tongue and Elisa Barbara, nee: Bliesner, two sisters, Elva and Cora, and two brothers, William and Everett. Herb Tongue's ancestors fought in both the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. The ancestors of Elisa emigrated from Prussia and settled in Wisconsin in 1846. Chris Hauer and Addie Leona Tongue were married April 23, 1911, at John Dyrud's homestead. All other members of both families, except Harriet, left the Maddock area to take up homesteads in Alberta, Canada. Mitch married Mable L. Olson in 1939. She was the daughter of Ed A. Olson of Maddock, and she died in 1959. To them was born Darrell L. Hauer, a pulmonary technician with the University of California at San Diego, and Nancy E. Hauer, an instructor of zoology in the University of Ohio. In 1970, Mitch married Mary M. Wells, and they reside in San Diego, Calif. + + + Mr. & Mrs. Ingman Haugen Ingman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Haugen, was born March 18, 1903.
