Summary:ROTHENBERGER, JOHN AND LIZETTA John, son of Ulrich and Annie Rothenberger, was born in Wisconsin in 1857. He came to Dakota Territory in 1881 and worked on a farm near Davenport. He returned <to Wisconsin in 1882 to marry Lizetta Gabelien and they homesteaded 31/2 miles south of what is now Marion. They spent much of the first two years living near Davenport, driving back and forth with team and lumber wagon, their children Jane and Louise were born there. They survived a tornado that demolished their house there by lying on the floor, their belongings were all destroyed, not even the mattresses could be found. Feathers were taken off chickens by the storm, they were left naked. They came to their home here in 1884 to stay. Their other children were born here, Grace (Mrs. Ed Baertsch), Emma (Mrs. Earl Baertsch), Frank, Kate (Mrs. Arthur Wood), and Nettie (Mrs. Carl Nelson). Jane married August Fichtner. The family farmed here until 1913 when they sold the homestead and moved into Marion. John died in 1940. Lizetta is also deceased. RUST, GEORGE In the fall of 1905, George C. Rust, John 0. Peterson, Adolph Strand and Arthur Volstead came to N. Dak. to buy land. George Rust purchased the 340 acre farm, known as the John Schoenecker farm, S.E. of Marion. The farm had some buildings. Peterson, Strand, and Volstead bought unimproved, unbroken sod quarter sections, two miles north of Marion. The following spring these four men with their wives and the four small Rust children, Clayton, Irma, Gerald and Rucille, came to Marion on the then new Northern Pacific track extension. They also brought along farm machinery, seed wheat, cattle, and horses. After completing their seeding operations, these four energetic young couples ali built new homes. That fall found them harvesting a bountiful crop of wheat which they sold for 40V a bushel. The Mesdames Rust, Peterson, Volstead and Mr. Strand were sisters and brother, respectively. The four families, built their homes, reared families and became active in the community affairs. All were instrumental in organizing and establishing the Norwegian Lutheran Church of Marion. The Rust children, the Peterson children, Gladys and Justus, the Volstead children, Jerome and Lloyd, and Inez Strand all attended and were graduated from the Marion Public School. SAILER, DONALD AND EILEEN Donald Sailer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Sailer, was born in 1935 at Stanton, North Dakota. With his family they moved to Marion on the Toedtder farm, south of town in the fall of 1946, where he attended school. In June, 1955 he married Eileen Alber, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Emil Alber. Eileen was born at Litchville in June, 1936. They have farmed since their marriage. They have five children: Deborah, born in 1957; Sharon, born in 1958; Ricky, born in 1959; Terri, born in 1962; and Todd, born in 1966. SANDNESS, ALVIN JR. AND SHARON Alvin Sandness, Jr. is the son of Alvin and Inga Sandness. He was born at Wimbledon, North Dakota in 1938. He lived in the Marion area all his life with his parents. He served a tour of duty in the Armed Forces. Alvin married Sharon Hardtke, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Hardtke, in April, 1969 at LaMoure, North Dakota. They live on the former Joe Liebing farm and Alvin is a carpenter. They have one daughter, Laurie, at home. SANDNESS, CHRISTIAN C. AND SOPHIA Christian C. Sandness was born near Aalesund, Norway. His wife, Sophia (Lauf) was born in Odessa, Russia, of German parents. They were married in 1901 at High Prairie Lutheran Church, Benson Corners, N.D. Christian arrived in the Marion community in about 1890. In 1892 he homesteaded S.E. of Marion. His son, John, has taken over the farm. They are the parents of 6 children: Olga, Mrs. Aimer Mastrud, Fergus Falls, Minn., 2 children, Elaine (Mrs. Robert Canton) and Delman of Fergus Falls, Minn.; John C. farms the home place near Marion; Harry, married Clara Leidahl, Everett, Wash.; Louise, Mrs. Alex Johnson, farms N.E. of LaMoure, N.D., has 4 children: Judith, (Mrs. Fernando Oldenburg), Colombia, South America; Janet (Mrs. Wayne Little), Dickinson, N.D.; Ramona (Mrs. Lance Yohe), Urbana, III.; Sonya (Mrs. Eugene Albertson), Fargo, N.D.; Cora, Mrs. Guy Melrose, Fort Ransom, N.D.; and Vernon, married Marion Kramer, lives in Valley City, N.D., and has 5 children, Gary; Sondra (Mrs. Lester Johnson); Nancy of Seattle, Wash.; Danny, U.S. Army; and Lori, at home. SARBAUM, ANTHONY AND MINNIE Anthony J. Sarbaum, son of Henry and Mary Sarbaum, was born in Litchville, N.D., March 26, 1905. His parents moved to Greenland Township shortly after. He attended Greenland School and later farmed with his brother, Martin. July 5, 1934 he was married to Minnie Lillehoff. That fall his brother, Martin, Martin's wife Mary, and infant son were killed in an auto accident. Anthony sold out and worked for the Ford Garage in Valley City, N.D. In 1936 he worked for Wear Ever Aluminum Co. In 1937 he went back to farming in Greenland Township. They bought the former Charles Froemke farm. Tony served as treasurer for Greenland Township for many years. In 1958, due to a heart attack, he semi-retired from farming, putting his land in Soil Bank. He continued to live on the farm until his death, Dec. 22, 1962. They had two children, James and Carol. Carol passed away October 24, 1954. James married Marlene Wagner, daughter of Ben and Lillian Wagner. James is in the armed forces and has made this his career. He has served in Germany, Japan, Turkey, England, Viet Nam and Korea. They have two daughters, Shellie Beth and Pamela Marie, Mrs. Jack Taylor, who has one son Shawn. Mrs. Sarbaum (Minnie) still lives on the farm but spends winters with her son or visits with sisters. SARBAUM, FRED AND ANN Fred Sarbaum was born in Grandville, Iowa, on February 22, 1894, to Mr. and Mrs. Henry Sarbaum. Ann Sperger was born in Elmwood, Wisconsin, on December 16, 1902, to Sam and Barbara Sperger. The Sarbaum family came to North Dakota in January 1905, arriving in Litchville. The Sperger family came to North Dakota in 1906. Fred and Ann both grew up in the Marion community, were married October 17, 1923, lived in Iowa 3 years, then farmed here until t958.
