MR. AND MRS. PETER A. PEDERSON 515-5TH AVE. SO. KENT, WASHINGTON 98301 Written by: Clara Nyseth Pederson My folks came from Norway in 1903 and settled at Rothsay, Minn, where Melvin and I were born. Then Dad went to North Dakota and homesteaded northwest of Steele, North Dakota. Mother, Melvin and I came on the train that fall to a sod house and sod barn. When we started to school we had to walk three miles to and from school. In the winter time we left home before day light and always saw coyotes, and wild horses that would try to chase us. We went to Exel- sior school two terms. Then a new school, Chestina No. 3 was built. One morning it was 32 below zero and I froze my feet going to school, so for a few days I had blisters on my feet and couldn't wear shoes. One afternoon we started home from school and it was real foggy. I was worried about Marie Botnen McCabe getting lost. I told her to follow the rabbit path, and it would take her to the gate by their grainery. She got home O.K., we got lost and ended up back at the school house. Pete came from Norway in 1903 to Marion, North Dakota where he attended rural school at Marion, North Dakota. I remember how we used to try to skate across the sloughs, sometimes we made it and there were times when we fell through the ice and had to crawl out. One time I broke my nose, then we went to a straw pile where we did what we called "roll Eskimo down the straw pile." My nose hurt so bad I only went down once. We are both of Lutheran faith. Pete was baptized in Norway and confirmed at Marion, North Dakota. I was baptized at Rothsay, Minn, and confirmed in the Zion Lutheran Church north of Driscoll, North Dakota. Many of the young folks in our neighborhood would gather at our house on Sundays and play baseball. We often had as many as 30 for afternoon coffee. One cold winter evening Clarence and Roy Olson came. Clarence took his glasses off, because they were steamed up and held them over the chimney of the kerosene lamp. It was just one quick flash, and all Clarence had left in his hand was a monocle. One day at noon, Erling Botnen came, took one look at the table and made the remark that there was one plate missing, so guessed he better go home. When he was asked to stay for dinner he said he didn't drink coffee but would drink milk. Cal told him that was O.K. there was still some milk in the cat dish. I will always remember my first ride in a car. Mrs. Charlie Young told mother to come get some strawberry plants, so Myrtle and I each had a pail full of plants and started for home. Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Carlson came by and offered to take us home in their new Ford. We were afrad to get into the car, we thought if he would get it started, would he ever get it stopped. Pete and I were married in the ministers house in Driscoll, North Dakota by Rev. Lars Foss. We lived on farms at Steele, Driscoll, Lucca, Valley City and Oriska, North Dakota. In 1940 we came to Kent, Washington where Pete worked for a plumber, on the Grand Coulee Dam and in the cannery where he was maintenance man for 26 years. All of our children graduated from Kent Meridian High School. Omar is also a graduate of the Valley City State College in Valley City, North Dakota. Carroll, Mrs. Pederson, Darlene, Clarinda, Mr. Pete Pederson and Omar Carroll our oldest boy married Pauline Shinn from Auburn, Washington. He is a supervisor with the Boeing Company in Seattle, Washington. Their address is Auburn, Washington. They have four children: Vicki, Gary, Byron and Debbie. Omar married Shirley Ball from Kent. He is an interviewer in the employment security department of the state of Washington. They live in Kent and have three children: Stephen, Sharon and Susan. Clarinda married Gerden J. (Jim) Clark from Kent. He is in real estate. They live in Kent and have three children also. Timothy, Lynnette and Jannelle. Darlene married Gordon Keech from Pocahontas, Arkansas. He is a welder. They live in Renton, Washington and have two children. Karen and Lowell. Altogether we have 12 grandchildren that enjoy coming to Grandpa and Grandma's house and check the cookie jar for cookies. Recess time at the Exelsior school we would choose up sides and have some hot debates over who were the best people. "Swedes" or "Norwegians". Majority won. "Three Swedes" (Carlson's Lester, Miles, Merritt)-"Eleven Nor- wegiks" (Lien's Clara, Andy and Tom; Nyseth's Clara, Melvin and Myrtle; Kelsven's Mabel, Eunice and Clarence; Hanson's Helmer and Bertha) C. B. AICHELE Mr. & Mrs. C. Bernell Aichele Denise & David C. Bernell Aichele married Evelyn McNeil, the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. J. R. McNeil now of Willmar, Minnesota. The Aicheles have two children-David 11 and Denise 9. After living in Chicago about eight years, we moved to 5552 Meadowood Drive, Indianpolis, Indiana 46224 in 1966. We invite anyone from the area to look us up when coming this way. Scanned with a Zeutschel Zeta book scanner at 300 dpi. Edited with Multi-Page TIFF Editor.
