The Hudson Bay drainage consists of the Souris and Red River systems, including the large, noncontributing, closed Devils Lake Basin (fig. 11). The longest tributary stream to the Red River is the Sheyenne River, which extends from central North Dakota, east and southeastward, before looping northeastward near Lisbon. There are five major hydrologic subdivisions in North Dakota: the Missouri River Basin, the James River Basin, the Red River Basin, the Devils Lake Basin, and the Souris River Basin. Surface water quality in North Dakota is quite variable and is influenced by climatic conditions, land use, erosion, and shallow groundwater discharged from springs.
