Summary:Anishinaubag Intercultural Center, Belcourt Turtle Mountain And Pembina Band Of Chippewa Indians History The Turtle Mountain Pembina Chippewa reservation is located entirely within Rolette County on the north central border of North Dakota and Canada. The reservation occupies an area 12 miles from east to west and six miles north to south, sprinkled with lakes, rolling hills, and an abundance of trees. The reservation contrasts sharply to the remainder of the state which is essentially flat prairie land. The Turtle Mountain Chippewa people number approximately 26,000, with about 14,000 enrolled members residing on or adjacent to the reservation. Because the reservation and spiritual grounds lie near the geographical center of North America, some say that the Turtle Mountains are the heart of Turtle Island, the original beginning place. According to Pembina Chippewa legend, Sky Woman looked down upon the waters that covered the earth after the great melting of the ice. She saw a Giant Turtle (who 40 Chapter 1 North Dakota's Native People
