Summary:Dakota Magic Casino and Hotel is located on the Sisseton-Wahpeton Lake Traverse Indian Reservation, near Hankinson, North Dakota. The Sisseton-Wahpeton Band is a subdivision of the eastern or Dakotah Indians. Although it is located primarily in South Dakota, the reservation has some land in North Dakota, where the casino is located. The casino's seven torches represent the Seven Council Fires, or major bands, of the Dakota-Lakota-Nakota Nation. through the 1910 Homestead Act had, in fact, always been part of the reservation. According to the Bureau of Indian Affairs Labor Force Report of 2005, there were 11,897 enrolled members of the Three Affiliated Tribes. The Labor Force Report also stated that the unemployment rate on the reservation was 71 percent, the same as was reported in 2001 and 2003. Census 2000 reported the total population living on the Fort Berthold Reservation was 5,915, with 67 percent of those self-reporting as American Indian. The United States Government, as defined by the United States Constitution, has governmental relationships with International, Tribal and State entities. The tribal nations have a government-to-government relationship with the United States. The Tribes signed treaties in the 1800s with the United States which are the legal documents that established our boundaries and recognized our rights as a sovereign government. The tribal government maintains jurisdiction within the boundaries of the reservation including all rights-of-way, waterways, water courses and streams running through any part of the reservation and to such other lands as may hereafter be added to the Reservation under the laws of the United States. The tribal government operates under a constitution consistent with the Indian Reorganization Act of 1934 and a Business Council approved by the tribal membership of the Three Affiliated Tribes. The Business Council consists of a Chairman, Vice-Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer and three additional Council members who are elected by the tribal members.
