Summary:The present paper contains analyses of arctic coals from Spitzbergen and the Beeren Island, partly previous published in various geological papers on these islands, but chiefly unpublished analyses from the last years. The old analyses and a great part of the new ones are made from more or less systematical sampling of the different coal deposits and so represent variations in the nature of the coals, but there are also several series of analyses of the coal exported to Norway and Sweden, sampled in standardized manner at the unloading of the coal ships. The analyses are given in the form mostly used in this country, all dates referring to the state of the sample as presented for analyses and no part of them referred to dried coal, but coke, volatile matter and calofiric power gross and net, are also recalculated to the pure coal substance, free from water and ashes, which figures give the typcal outline of the various sorts undisturbed by the varying amount of impurities. All analysis by analysts using the common english type of recording, \"proximate analysis\" of moist coals, \"ultimate analysis\" of dry coals, have been recalculated to uniformity with the main part fort sake of better comparison. Mr. Adolf Hoel, geologist at the university of Kristiania, who especially has explored the geology and mineral resources of the islands has classified the analyses according to the geologieal age of the different sorts of coal and given a short description of the coal fields, their site, extension and importance. 35757
