米国アラスカ州バローにおけるイヌピアットによるクジラの分配は，規則に基づく分配と自主的な分配に大別することができる。これら2 種類の分配は，協働狩猟による成果である，文化的価値の高い食料をコミュニティ全体にいきわたらせるための社会的なしかけになっている。また，これらの2 種類の分配の実践は，世界観の再生産や，さまざまなレベルでのアイデンティティと社会関係の再生産という効果以外に，文化的価値の高い食料の獲得手段やコミュニティの福祉（wellfare）への貢献，個人や世帯レベルでの食料の消費量の平準化などさまざまな機能や効果がある。さらに，これら2 種類の分配を通してキャプテンやその乗組員（ハンター）は社会的名声や政治的影響力を得ることができる。筆者は，これらの複数の機能や効果のためにバロー村のイヌピアットの間では2 種類の分配が存続していると考える。現代のイヌピアット社会における捕鯨や獲物の分配の実践は，個人的な利潤追求のためではなく，彼らにとって価値のある資源をコミュニティのために追い求め，コミュニティ全体で分ち合うことであり，それ自体が目的と化している。そしてその結果は，コミュニティ全体の福利（well-being）に貢献している。 Among the Inupiat of Barrow, Alaska, there are two kinds of sharingpractice surrounding whale meat and maktak (whale skin with blubber): formalsharing by rule and voluntary. Both are social devices relating to the culturallyincluding an efficient distribution device to the whole community, a contributionto community welfare, and a leveling mechanism for the consumption ofwhale products at the individual or household level, in addition to reproductionfunctions of the Inupiat worldview, identities at several levels, and socialrelationships. Also, through these two kinds of sharing practice, whaling captainsand their crews attain social prestige and political influence. Finally, thisauthor argues that for the Inupiat, whale hunting and sharing are not individualprofit-seeking practices but an important social means for seeking andsharing culturally highly-valued resources such as whale products communitywide.Whaling and the sharing of its products seem to be an important aim,the results of which contribute to community well-being.highly valued food which must be distributed to the whole community.Furthermore, these sharing practices have multi-dimensional functions
