米国アラスカ州バローにおけるイヌピアットによるクジラの分配は，規則に 基づく分配と自主的な分配に大別することができる。これら2 種類の分配は， 協働狩猟による成果である，文化的価値の高い食料をコミュニティ全体にいき わたらせるための社会的なしかけになっている。また，これらの2 種類の分配 の実践は，世界観の再生産や，さまざまなレベルでのアイデンティティと社会 関係の再生産という効果以外に，文化的価値の高い食料の獲得手段やコミュニ ティの福祉（wellfare）への貢献，個人や世帯レベルでの食料の消費量の平準化 などさまざまな機能や効果がある。さらに，これら2 種類の分配を通してキャ プテンやその乗組員（ハンター）は社会的名声や政治的影響力を得ることがで きる。筆者は，これらの複数の機能や効果のためにバロー村のイヌピアットの 間では2 種類の分配が存続していると考える。現代のイヌピアット社会におけ る捕鯨や獲物の分配の実践は，個人的な利潤追求のためではなく，彼らにとっ て価値のある資源をコミュニティのために追い求め，コミュニティ全体で分ち 合うことであり，それ自体が目的と化している。そしてその結果は，コミュニ ティ全体の福利（well-being）に貢献している。 Among the Inupiat of Barrow, Alaska, there are two kinds of sharing practice surrounding whale meat and maktak (whale skin with blubber): formal sharing by rule and voluntary. Both are social devices relating to the culturally including an efficient distribution device to the whole community, a contribution to community welfare, and a leveling mechanism for the consumption of whale products at the individual or household level, in addition to reproduction functions of the Inupiat worldview, identities at several levels, and social relationships. Also, through these two kinds of sharing practice, whaling captains and their crews attain social prestige and political influence. Finally, this author argues that for the Inupiat, whale hunting and sharing are not individual profit-seeking practices but an important social means for seeking and sharing culturally highly-valued resources such as whale products communitywide.
