Both are social devices relating to the culturallyincluding an efficient distribution device to the whole community, a contributionto community welfare, and a leveling mechanism for the consumption ofwhale products at the individual or household level, in addition to reproductionfunctions of the Inupiat worldview, identities at several levels, and socialrelationships. Also, through these two kinds of sharing practice, whaling captainsand their crews attain social prestige and political influence. Finally, thisauthor argues that for the Inupiat, whale hunting and sharing are not individualprofit-seeking practices but an important social means for seeking andsharing culturally highly-valued resources such as whale products communitywide.Whaling and the sharing of its products seem to be an important aim,the results of which contribute to community well-being.highly valued food which must be distributed to the whole community.Furthermore, these sharing practices have multi-dimensional functions |
