They were the fourth party to visit the Vestfolds, the first to land at this spot, and the only one to penetrate beyond the beach. Australian Official Photograph by George Lowe."--Printed on label on verso.; "Between December and March each year, at the height of the brief Antarctic summer, the Australian National Antarctic Research Expedition relief ship Kista Dan visits the three Australian Antarctic Scientific Research stations on Heard and Macquarie Island and at Mawson on the Antarctic mainland. In January 1955, Kista Dan, enroute from Heard Island station to Mawson stopped at three points on the continental coastline to allow exploratory parties ashore. One of these points was the Vestfold Hills, a strange, ice-free region of rocky hills first revealed in aerial photographs by American fliers some years ago. It was to explore and examine more closely this interesting region that the ANARE party put ashore."--Printed on label on verso.; Condition: Buckled.; "L18603"--From label on verso.; Also available online at: http://nla.gov.au/nla.pic-vn6001661; Donated by Mrs Julie Carver, 2012.
