Description
Summary:Map of the northern west coast of America leading to the Bering Strait and the northern east coast of Asia. In 1776 James Cook undertook his third and final voyage his aim being to explore the West coast of North America and tried to locate a passage between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. After discovering the Hawaiian Islands (which he named the Sandwich Islands), he sailed up the coast of North America through the Bering Strait to the Arctic Ocean. From this he concluded that a usable passage to the Atlantic Ocean did not exist. The map covers his journey up the North American coast from May 1, 1778 until he turned back on October 31 to the Hawaiian Islands where he was killed in Feb. 1779. His lieutenants continued the mission by sailing across the Pacific to Kamtschatka, Russian territory, and from April 1779 sailed north along the Asian coast exploring the Bering Strait in July 1779.
