ATMOSPHERIC HEAT AND WATER BUDGETS OF POLAR REGIONS : ANALYSIS OF FGGE DATA

Monthly and annual budgets of energy and water in the atmosphere are calculated for the two polar caps, northward of 70°N and southward of 70°S. FGGE (First GARP Global Experiment) IIIb data produced by ECMWF (European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts) are used. For the north polar cap, rea...

Description
Summary:Monthly and annual budgets of energy and water in the atmosphere are calculated for the two polar caps, northward of 70°N and southward of 70°S. FGGE (First GARP Global Experiment) IIIb data produced by ECMWF (European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts) are used. For the north polar cap, reasonable results are obtained, confirming an independent analysis by N. NAKAMURA and A. H. OORT (J. Geophys. Res., 93,9510,1988). For the south polar cap, large uncertainty remains in the estimation of advective transport due to the mean meridional circulation.
