The drill system used by the 21st Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition and its later improvement

A drill system designed by the first author and made by Koken Shisui Kogyo K. K. was successfully used by the other author to drill several holes down to 143m in 1980 in Antarctica. The system and its performance are presented together with brief reference to its predecessors and successors.
