Substantial differences in the temperature, precipitation (which combine to affect the available water) and radiation determine the distribution and the habit of primary producers that in turn structure the trophic. Because terrestrial primary production is operating at environmental extremes in some parts of Antarctica, particularly in continental Antarctica, the spatial and temporal subsidies to the terrestrial stock of organic carbon make proportionately larger contributions to contemporary carbon cycling
