Summary:This paper reports briefly an attempt to examine the tectonic evolution of the Scotia Sea region, in the context of the use of broad-band seismological techniques there. Such techniques can determine present plate boundaries, and examine crustal and upper mantle velocities and velocity anisotropy. Some studies are already under way (e.g. Vuan et al., 1999; Mueller, 1999; in press) and additional work is planned. An understanding of Scotia Sea evolution should allow future work to become more focussed.
